Mako Character in A Quiet Realm - Prostesa | World Anvil

Mako

Mako Kahananui (a.k.a. Junkai)

"Listen, man, I sympathize with ya, but if you're gonna mug someone, make it someone that actually has things worth takin'."
- Mako, having defended himself from a thief

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Despite originally being the runt of the Kahananui family, Mako is the second-tallest and heaviest family member, experiencing a growth spurt at the age of 20. Battling echoes in an attempt to protect Aohiri has kept him active and healthy despite his addictions. He has a tendency to shake off the worst of diseases without worry.

Body Features

Across Mako's body are runes inscribed in a forgotten language. When using his divinity, they gleam brightly. The runes look distinctly like those of Celestials, but only the armon knows what they mean.

Special abilities

Mako's Divinity is called "Soul Swap." When put to use, it allows him to share the conscience and senses of others. With this divinity in effect, Mako can adapt to almost any situation. The only caveat is that damaging his partner damages him as well and vice-versa.   As a member of the Sacred Eight Bushi, Mako developed a combat technique designed to both harness the power of his divinity and embody the symbiosis of water-born Louistans, Ebb and Flow. It varies depending on the target of Mako's divinity, ensuring that it adapts in the same way Mako does.

Personal history

Family Life

Show Spoiler
Hailing from the second quarter of Louistas, Mako was born into a prospering noble family. As he was the second son to be born, Mako was denied the right to inheritance and was made to serve his elder brother, Molokai, when the time came for the boy to inherit the family’s estate. Mako didn’t complain. Ironically, it was this complacency Mako nestled in that set him at odds with his father, Kauri. Seen as inferior to the brother he grew up with and a disgrace to the Kahananui name, Mako never saw the end of his father’s abrasive parenting. The boy would often sit awake at night and listen to his parents argue with one another on what was best for him.   In Kauri’s time, the mark of a good parent was when a son followed in their father’s footsteps to become greater than they were. The Kahananui praised the mighty; Mako’s family had dominated a sizable portion of Louistas’ second quarter for two centuries and made a name for themselves as the upper echelon of their empire’s military. Mako wasn’t a warrior. It wasn’t in his nature. One night, having overheard an argument between his parents, Mako left to wander the world and never returned.

A Third Road

Show Spoiler
By some chance, Mako had discovered Xeimos, Chosen of Sarenrae. The dragon recognized a familiar tiredness in the armon’s eyes and offered a path to him. Endorsed by the dragon, Mako joined seven other heroes in becoming the Eight Sacred Bushi of Louistas. He took the role of the fifth virtue: Honesty, befitting his gentle spirit. Among his peers, Mako was known as Junkai (meaning “sincere ocean”). To the Kahananui, battle prowess came easily, and Mako was no exception. Gifted in unarmed combat, a skill that was surpassed only by his proficiency with blades, he quickly proved to be just as capable as the rest of his family.

Returning Home

Show spoiler
In the year 5613 A.A., Mako returned with finally the means to make his father proud of him. But the land that greeted the armon had been all but destroyed, evidence of an echo’s recent ravaging. Within the estate, he saw the dismembered corpses of his servants, their faces pale and frozen in terror. His parents were nowhere to be found. With nobody to return home to, Mako left to wander the world once more, drifting aimlessly between countries and passing along wisdom to echo survivors. They needed the help more than he did.

Personality Characteristics

Virtues & Personality perks

Since his childhood, Mako was always known for his intuition. At the age of 16, the development of his divinity resulted in this aspect of his character boosting tremendously. The speed in which he can pick apart a stranger's persona is considered the fastest of the Sacred Eight Bushi.    Following the tenets of the Fifth Virtue, Mako never leaves a job half done. He doesn't believe in promises, believing that speaking and doing are the same.

Vices & Personality flaws

He is, unashamedly, rarely sober. The date he developed this addiction is unknown, but it manifested after echoes threw Louistas into chaos.

Social

Social Aptitude

Mako will get along with just about anyone, and his informality never changes despite the person he's speaking to. Though it may be a side-effect of being constantly intoxicated, Mako does have his spare moments of clarity, however brief they are.

Speech

Lacking typical Sacred Eight etiquette, Mako's manner of speaking is very informal and direct. His Louistan accent is hard to notice as he's picked up different ways of speaking from around the world. Occasionally, a few words from the Goblin language will peek through; Goblin is another form of Common in Louistas.

Signature Weapons   Mako fights with two crescent-shaped knives, each weighing 5 lbs (or 2.3kg). He prefers to brute force his way through enemies when using them. It's believed these originally belonged to Kauri, as Mako's father was a butcher in his youth. They're enchanted, but it's unknown what the enchantment is.   The censer weighs 1 lb (or 0.5kg) and is typically attached to a foot long (0.3m) chain. It's used as a flail when Mako opts to not use his knives. The mist that emanates from the censer varies depending on the substance burned, but the scent is strong nonetheless.
"Fifth Virtue, Honesty - Water Style: Ebb and Flow!"
- Mako's signature chant
