Lefty Character in A Quiet Realm - Prostesa | World Anvil

Lefty

In the twilight of seasons
When day gives way to night
The border between worlds
Thins, welcoming a blight
Through a book, through a mirror—
There are many ways within.
What’s waiting on the other side
Is where all nightmares begin.
Lefty is one of Aohiri’s oldest legends, originating in the Twilight Isles and very popular among Morigans, who identify him as an old wives’ tale. Stories vary, though most all connect back to the same concept: Lefty is “everyone’s imaginary friend, whether they realize it or not.”

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Children have all described Lefty in the same way: a tall and rotund sack-like monster. He looked to have been torn and stitched back together in a few parts of his body to preserve him. Notably, his face is mostly free of scars.

Body Features

His body, though clearly made of cloth and held together by stitching, concealed a thin layer of flesh underneath. Children that have since grown up have said that the cloth itself feels like how cloth would, but somewhere underneath was a heartbeat. In the quietest of rooms, one could hear this heartbeat.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

It was often said that only children or adults with wild imaginations could see him. Possessions that were cast out of homes or left behind and forgotten by children were said to be brought alive by Lefty, bearing vengeance, to drag the children away from their families so they could be forgotten as well.    It's agreed upon by historians that the concept of Lefty was created in order to teach children the responsibility of taking care of their toys. Scaring children into obedience was a common practice in Morigor yet much less prevalent today. Lefty has since become a holiday figure, though it's not unusual for talk of him to occur at any time. Ironically, children speak the most of him.   The people of the Twilight Isles are particularly superstitious when it comes to Lefty. They refuse to sing nursery rhymes about him when alone, believing that it attracts vengeful spirits; in all regions of the Isles, children are given a curfew; possessions that have gone without use for at least a year are to be completely and utterly destroyed whether by incineration or disintegration.

Social

Social Aptitude

Perhaps due to the naivete of children or his own charisma, children never feared him as much as adults did. Lefty has always been described as friendly and protective of them, offering them advice when they had nobody else to go to. Lefty “always listened, was always there, and never turned down a game.” It’s unknown whether or not he was a good or bad influence, as only sparing things were ever said about him.

Wealth & Financial state

Children that kids Lefty deemed “good” were given one or two gold coins to spend on whatever they wished. He would only ever reward a child this way once per year, but his constant presence and encouragement often convinced them to behave and act respectful of their peers and parents.

"Left Foot, Right Foot!"

It was theorized that children knew instinctively of Lefty's existence, even if they hadn't ever met him in person. There is a game created by Morigan children called "Left Foot, Right Foot" which appears to be quite similar to Blind Man's Buff or Marco Polo. When a person is found and tagged, whoever is "It" picks an appendage from the right side of the caught person's body and prevents it from being used in the game. When a person is unable to use both their right arm and right leg, they are out of the game. Children claim this to be Lefty's favorite game and that he "always wins."

Little Wick Nursery Rhyme

Little Wick, Little Wick,
Lock your parents’ door.
Little Wick, Little Wick,
Quiet across the floor.
  Little Wick, Little Wick,
Hanging at your left.
Little Wick, Little Wick,
Formed of ichor-weft.
  Little Wick, Little Wick,
Where has she gone?
Little Wick, Little Wick,
Disappeared by dawn.
  Little Wick, Little Wick,
Never speak his name.
Little Wick, Little Wick,
Forgotten she became.
