Locii

The Locii are a subset of Halfwing peoples, known as Rural Halfwings, who live alongside the Vespula and Communal Halfwings, they have longer lifespans due to spending alternating periods hibernating.

Who are they and what do they look like?

  • Rural (cicada) Halfwings tend to live longer (150-160 years, with 81 being mid-age)
  • They tend to be bulkier and muscular but are typically on the shorter side
  • They often have argyria or skin painted with red ochre and earthy colours
  • Completely different reproductive cycle than modern humans but similar anatomy
  • They have underdeveloped eyes on the top of their head, but these are typically hidden by their hair and detect light
  • A lot of them are hairy, this helps trap heat and help them secrete honeydew as sweat
  • They do not get saggy skin because of the chiten in their organs, but they definitely start looking frightening and ghastly when close to death, mostly because of their death rattles
  • They have red-orange ("sunset-colored") compound eyes
  • They live in trees and are thus one of the most common forest people
  • Their hair is almost always brown or black when it hits the sunlight but becomes an irridescent aura colour in the dark/underside

What are their senses or perceptions?

  • They have extra eyes that can detect light and thus can excellently navigate the Forests
  • They communicate in a language and rustling that sounds like singing, and there are elaborate Arthurian courtship rituals
  • They live in the giant Yew (and other) trees, new couples are meant to start their own wyva or join with a stronger/wealthier family
  • They spend 18 years as nymphs, reproduce every 9, and thus have mass emergences in forests and this is seen particularly in Eskern with the Three Families
  • Citron and Brine Users (near the coasts), Brimstone and Flint in the mountains
  • Sensitive to Heavy Metal
  • A lot of them are midwives

Where are they in your setting?

  • Kargast, where the Family of Bel live
  • Karkebi, where the Family of Don live
  • The Islands, where the Family of Lir live
  • Eskern, where the Family of Nod live
  • Sealtland, where the Family of Watt live
  • They usually mix in with the locals, and become fixtures of the landscape

How do they survive in their environment?

  • They have a lot of offspring and those who don't fully grow can be fermented or processed into meat
  • They are excellent at guerrila warfare as well as being stronger than many of the other tribes
  • Long lifespan with high recovery rate
  • They feed on harmful plants that need to be tamed
  • They can basically upcycle anything

What is their general attitude?

  • They are subsistence creators each pair is responsible for a brood
  • They typically inhabit a tree with other Halfwings, usually in a ruling position but they also provide vital protection
  • Most of them are self-governing, or govern an area with a council of elders
  • They are recyclers and alchemists, and were vital in developing Lithomancy

How do they feel about the other peoples?

  • They are pretty chill because those who survive have typically strong willed and confident personalities
  • They have the genetic advantages in their area being larger and stronger and longer living than some other tribes so this goes either way:
  • They subjugate the "lesser" tribes and end up overthrown or parasitoids
  • They govern fairly and become seen more as elders than tyrants. They are much weaker until they reach about 45-54 years when they go through their Great Metamorphosis
  • They are the most relaxed with Atraxids because of their similar ways of life and ancient nature, though there have been instances of fighting
  • They had a major role in the development of the Gannwyll Gwydd culture, despite not working with Flint as much
