Gladia
Gladia is one of the three job streams for professional guilds. Gladia professions are focused primarily on resource gathering and protective/offensive roles in the community. They typically enter military or mercenary guilds, or work with the natural world such as husbandry and agricola.
What’s involved in this job?
- Population organization in communities, human resources (urban planning)
- Enforcement of law and governance (infrastructure)
- Infantry, armoury/weaponry, scouting/strategy (military)
- Expeditions, naturalists, zoologists, explorers (wilderness expeditions)
- Emergency training, crisis intervention (peacekeeping)
- Representing their culture on a physical level (statesmanship)
What qualifications and skills are needed?
- Each rank requires specific amounts of field experience at different leadership levels
- Everything after Novice rank requires an initiation into a guild
- There are particular certifications for skills depending on the guild you are initiated into
- Many certifications are considered "hard skills" such as physical/martial arts, emergency medical care, terrain navigation/hunting (ranger)
- Other certifications are "soft skils" such as diplomacy, religious studies/history (particularly of war and disaster), and experience-based teaching
What are the perks?
- It fills the Second Need of the Folk: Prowess in warfare and execution of need
- It is a physically demanding work that allows for heroism, glory, and cultural feats
- Excellent for active extroverts who enjoy pushing social change
- They often have the first sight of new lands or animals, allowing for constant adventure and excitement
- They are known to be extremely helpful during times of crisis or emergency
And finally, what’s the risk?
- It can be very demanding on the physical body and also unsafe
- Lower ranks have a high rate of early death, which sharply decreases by the higher ranks
- The environments often encourage harmful social behaviours
