Element of Brimstone

Brimstone is one of the Five Classic Elements of Lithomancy. It an metaphysical element comprised almost entirely of the mineral Sulphur, but with some lesser-used and rare materials. Brimstone has a wide variety of uses, from medicinal applications, to construction, to warfare. It is considered one of the easier elements to learn and use, forming a synergy with the body typically without much negative effects.

How localized or global are the effects?

  • Global
  • Brimstone is accessible for Chemosynthesis anywhere its raw materials are found
  • It is most commonly found with the Brine element of Sodium
  • It is also found in the ocean around plateaus, but harder to mine
  • At one point it was manufactured through Rock Oil chemosynthesis
  • More prominent in arid climates (Sealtland, Cargast, Pestilentia, Krummholz, North Sinderfall)

How does it look or manifest?

  • It manifests as several ores and raw materials
  • Straifstone - appears as brittle, bright yellow crystals. It is common almost everywhere, particularly arid regions
  • Hagsbreath - invisible and not recognised outside of Helbnos. It is virtually unknown in warmer regions.
  • Bloodstone - appears as a ruby powder, a glass-like black crystal, or a gray crystal. It is rarely found on its own and is often found accompanying other elements, particularly Heavy Metals.
  • Bindgold - appears as silvery-white metallic stone or a dark powder. It is rarely found on its own similar to Bloodstone.

How does it affect plants and animals of your world?

  • It is known that Sulphur is a major part of organic life, and sometimes sulphur tests are used to determine the genetic makeup of someone (though this can be difficult with Coriniaid who transform often have a higher concentration of sulphur)
  • Hagsbreath concentrations cause genetic mutations, and are the secret reason behind Godsibbs and Coriniaid chromosonal breakdowns, plants also grow much larger in these concentrations
  • Bloodstone and Bindgold concentration is found in Heavy Metal users fairly often but doesn't seem to naturally affect animals. However, it can be poisonous if exposed to its raw form unprotected

What problems or benefits does it create for people?

  • Brimstone is essential in creating weaponry, shapeshifting magic, and is used for cheap fumigation and disinfecting
  • Some cultures use it in the cremation process, where it causes fire to burn a light blue
  • Hagsbreath is without them knowing, essential to most life in the atmosphere, but its concentrations cause genetic catastrophes to occur
  • Bloodstone and Bindgold are poisonous and more difficult to work with
