The Helm of Tyr

The eddas tell us that at Ragnarök, the armies of the jotunn will burn across Asgard, while the armies of Hel raze Midgard to the ground. To help us defend ourselves against the armies of the dead, the gods gave us a mighty gift. In the temple at Oslo there is a helm, once worn by Tyr himself during the wars he fought against the jotunn. All of his knowledge of battle and strategy were infused into the helm. To the rightful king of Midgard it will grant the military genius of Odinn’s own general, so he will be able to fight back against Hel’s forces, and save Midgard from destruction.   To gain the power, a ceremony must be conducted during the Ostara festival at the beginning of summer. All 15 of Norway’s jarls must attend as witnesses. They must each bring 9 oxen for sacrifice, as a symbol of pledging their lands to the new king. They must also each bring 36 of their finest warriors, with horses, to strengthen the new king’s army. Finally, they must each bring 900 gold, to build the new army’s fortresses and fleets. The gothis will then call forth Thor to hallow the oxen, Freyr to accept the sacrifice, and Tyr to bless the new king.   Once crowned, the new king must take an oath to defend all of Midgard, and to finish building the fortresses before 3 summers have passed. There will be one fortress in Oslo, one in Bergen, and one in Trondheim. Each will be in the shape of the valknut, with 9 longhouses arranged in 3 groups. In each group, 2 longhouses will house the men and one will house the boats. 6 boats will be constructed for each fortress. In the center of each fortress will be a Hof with god poles for Thor, Freyr, and Tyr. Offerings will be given to each at the solstices and equinoxes.   The gods must not be called until everything has been gathered and prepared, or their wrath will be terrible, and they will curse Midgard with the coldest winter ever known. If the fortresses and boats are not constructed within 3 summers, or the king fails to use his forces to protect Midgard, the crown will be forfeit, and Tyr will drag the false king to stand before Hel herself to answer for his oathbreaking.
