The Stanengist Crown

In the early days, an alliance formed between elves and dwarves against the encroachment of man. In honor of the agreement, each side offered a measure of their power for the creation of a magnificent artifact capable of holding the race of men at bay.   For their part, the dwarves mustered all the legendary craftsmanship of their kin and forged a crown of gold and steel with sockets for six gems to be fitted across its brow. Long regarded as the most perfect of dwarven creations, the crown was named Stanengist (The Hanging Stones) and gifted to the elves.   To complete the binding of power to the crown, the elves placed within the sockets the life rubies of the first six elves to grace the lands-the ones who planted the trees, drew the furrows of the rivers and gave the animals their home.   For a long time, the crown was worn by the elven kings of the land and granted them the power to keep the kingdoms of elves and dwarves intact. But as years went on, distrust grew between elves and dwarves and an age of tension boiled between the races. Sometime during this crisis between former allies, the gems were stolen from the crown, leaving it powerless. As the dwarves and elves blamed each other to the point of almost declaring outright war, the crown itself was lost and never seen again.   Legend holds that whoever re-assembles the stones in the crown and places it on his/her head shall gain the power to rally all of its kin and rule over the Forbidden Lands.   The dwarven stonesinger Brander of Bynd, a hero of the dwarven race, is said to have received a vision from The Dwarven God Huge in which he saw some of the lost stones set into other artifacts-the scepter of a dead king, the jewelry of a black hearted queen, and a sword that slays giants.
