Kamennazena
“Kamennazena” is the Balgrendian word for “grandmother,” one of the few common to both the Bhal and Grenn dialects. Its idiomatic meaning translates into “wise woman,” a title bestowed to those who have mastered certain medicinal practices and herbal lore. Not every village has a kamennazena, but the ones who do enjoy greater health and prosperity, along with protection from the dark spirits roaming the forests. Throughout Balgrendia’s history, the kamennazena were prized and beloved, cherished for their gifts and protected from harm.
However, in recent years, attitudes toward the kamennazena have shifted. Instead of protecting them and valuing their contributions, communities have begun to blame them for their troubles, seeing them as dark witches, or old hags who consort with demons and monsters. Whenever fear and superstition peaks in the countryside, these village grandmothers usually face terrible persecution, ranging from banishment to stoning.
