Tooth Fairy

Tooth Fairies are tiny Fey creatures with a fascination for the teeth of Sapients. Some are harmless individuals who seek out only teeth lost naturally or from the dead, while others are malevolent beings that delight in the pain they cause by stealing the teeth of living beings.   Tooth Fairies used to be quite numerous within the Material Plane, however with the Fey Retreat and the fall of the Age of Arcana, they have become a much rarer sight. Tooth Fairies are best approached with caution, as it is often impossible to tell whether they are benevolent or malevolent. While benevolent Tooth Fairies are generally harmless to Sapients, and are more likely to flee than risk a confrontation, malevolent Tooth Fairies can be spiteful and viscious.

General Description

Tooth Fairies are tiny bipedal Sapients like other types of fairy, averaging between 5-7 inches in height. Their skintones vary between pale and dark grey with hints of blue and yellow, their eyes are usually blue, black or grey and their hair ranges from silvery blonde to black. The wings of Tooth Fairies resemble those of a lacewing, and are either clear with a rainbow iridescence, or blue-tinted black with an oil-like iridescence. Like all Fey, they possess long, pointed, outward-pointed ears, but the upper helix is noticeably ridged. Tooth Fairies are generally quite frail and so would prefer to engage in long-range attacks when their enemies are otherwise engaged or incapacitated.

Variations

Greater Tooth Fairy

A more powerful type of Tooth Fairy that has not yet achieved Archfeydom.

Common Personality Traits

Depending on whether they are aligned with the Seelie or Unseelie Courts, Tooth Fairies can either be benevolent or malevolent to Mortal Sapients. Most have a fascination with collecting teeth and can be generally quite excitable, though older Tooth Fairies have learned to temper these traits with caution.   The way that Tooth Fairies go about collecting teeth varies from Fairy to Fairy, though most will take a stealthy approach to their work. They are determined and often relentless in nature, though benevolent Tooth Fairies are more likely to retreat from a problematic situation and rethink their approach than malevolent ones, who are generally more ruthless. All Tooth Fairies are prone to holding grudges, so angering or upsetting one is generally not a good idea. Angered Tooth Fairies will often retaliate by causing accidents or will outright steal teeth from the mouth of the one who angered them.

Common Abilities

Tooth Fairies are able to fly due to their wings; they are naturally fast and agile but are not as strong as other types of Fairy. They are blessed with powerful Sleep and enchantment abilities and are incredibly stealthy, especially when using their Invisibility magic. A Tooth Fairy's bite can cause paralysis and their Fairy Dust has the ability to charm individuals, making them more susceptible to Sleep abilities. Tooth Fairies possess Darkvision and are immune to magical Darkness. Unlike other fairies, Tooth Fairies do not have shapeshifting abilities, but are instead immune to magic that would alter their form.   Greater Tooth Fairies are capable of placing curses on people that they are particularly aggrieved by. In addition, it is said that they are able to absorb the power of other creatures temporarily by absorbing the essence of their teeth. This includes non-Sapient creatures, such as beasts and monsters.

Culture and Society

Tooth Fairy culture varies depending upon the Court with which they are aligned, though Tooth Fairies of both Courts are known to favour the worship of the Sylvan Pantheon and the love of all things beautiful and artistic. They value their freedom and individuality, though Tooth Fairies of the Seelie Court are more likely to engage in communal co-operation than Unseelie Tooth Fairies, who have a slightly more selfish attitude. All Tooth Fairies are taught to speak, read and write in Sylvan, and most also learn the Common or Elvish tongues. Because of their frailty, Tooth Fairy cultures have a high stealth and magic focus in their teachings and few Tooth Fairies learn to use melee weapons. They do, however, have a highly developed tool design industry and many Tooth Fairies carry a variety of magical or mechanical implements to aid them in their collection of teeth.   Teeth play a huge part in the culture and society of Tooth Fairies. Teeth are used to craft their homes and furniture, and are also used as adornments and accessories, as well as magical Foci and components. After the Fey Retreat, relatively few Tooth Fairies were permitted into the Material Plane at any one time, and so to be chosen to go on a "raid" or "excursion" is considered one of the highest honours.   Seelie Tooth Fairy settlements are usually run by a Matriarch who answers to the Tooth Fairy Duchess, who herself answers to the Fairy Queen Maeve. Unseelie settlements likewise answer to a Matriarch, but they instead follow the rule of Queen Mab directly. The settlements of Tooth Fairies are most often built into large hollow trees, within secluded hollows, or in caverns with lots of natural light.

Gender and Sexuality

Tooth Fairies show little in the way of sexual dimorphism outside of their reproductive characteristics, and most are considered to have an androgenous appearance. There is no difference in physical or magical ability between males and females, though genetic females are more numerous than genetic males at a ratio of 6:1. The birth of a male Tooth Fairy is therefore a highly celebrated occurence, though there is rarely any favouritism or additional diligence shown toward them.   Tooth Fairies have a relatively fluid approach to gender and sexuality, and are highly accepting of most orientations or preferences. Many Tooth Fairies are Bi or Pansexual, and most will have experimented with their gender or sexuality at some point in their lives.

Diet

Tooth Fairies tend toward vegetarianism, though some are omnivorous. Tooth Fairies love milk and dairy products, but tend to shy away from anything overly sweet.

Byproducts

Tooth Fairies produce a magical dust that, like most other fairies, has charm abilities. While it is possible to harvest this dust without harm to the Tooth Fairy, and it can in fact be given willingly by the Fairy, many more nefarious apothecaries and magical component producers will seek to capture Tooth Fairies in order to harvest their dust forcibly. There is little difference between dust that is given willingly and that which is taken by force, save perhaps for the brightness of its luminescence.   Tooth Fairy wings can also be used as components for powerful flight and invisibility potions, but their use is prohibited in much of Eirinn and Duraloth. Black market trade for their wings is therefore very profitable.
