Lavellan Dressings

Lavellan Dressings are a type of magical bandage crafted from the boiled, still-furred skins of the Lavellan (Làbh-allan in Sylvan). The Lavellan is a large Fey rodent with potent magical properties that includes an Aura of Sickness and a poisonous gas that they exhale, making it a tricky foe. However, Lavellan skin is one of the most potent wound dressings known to Sapientkind, able to cure all manner of infections and soft tissue injuries with a single application. The boiling process softens the skin and removes the waterproof outer layer of the fur, allowing the magical properties of the fur to be accessed. Additionally, the water used to boil the skins can be used to make Lavellan Tincture.

Description

Lavellan Dressings are obviously furry bandages that are flexible and feel velveteen to the touch. They are generally a reddish-brown in colour with an obvious furred side and skin side. The bandages must be applied topically to the area to be treated, fur-side down, and can be clipped, tied or pinned in place like regular bandages.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

When applied as a full bandage, the fur of the bandage will break down on contact with blood, infection or other secretions from injury, and will begin a magical healing process. Patients will notice a tingling sensation in the affected area, but any pain should disappear after an hour, if not sooner. The bandages are effective on most types of open and infected soft tissue injuries, but will have no effect of subdermal injuries, broken bones or scars.

If the use of a full bandage is inefficient or wasteful, pieces of fur can be snipped off the bandage and applied to the injury with a regular bandage.

Manufacturing process

Killed Lavellans must be skinned, ideally immediately, before the decomposition process starts, as tainted skins are more likely to cause harm than good. Once the skins have been removed from the creature, they must then be added to a large pot of boiling water and boiled for 48 hours. This process softens the skin, removes any remaining flesh and/or viscera, and breaks down the waterproof coating of the hairs on the skin. After boiling, the skins must be hung to dry in a relatively flat manner, so that the skins do not curl.

History

Lavellan Dressings were first introduced into the Material Plane early in the First Age, the Age of Renewal, by Fey visitors and traders. They were reasonably widely available, though many initially balked at the idea of utilising furred skins as bandages. They gained popularity during the following Ages, peaking in demand during the Age of Arcana, where they were commonly available in General Stores alongside regular bandages.

However, after the Fey Retreat and the subsequent Fall of the Age of Arcana, trade between the Fey Realms and the Material Plane dwindled to a near halt. This meant that Lavellan Dressings, which were highly reliant on Lavellan skins, became very difficult to obtain as there were few colonies of these creatures within the Material Plane. As the Ages of Chaos and Darkness passed, trade between the Material Plane and Border-Fey began in sporadic bursts, and Lavellan Dressings returned to the Material Plane economy as a luxury item.

Availability

Lavellan Dressings are widely available in the Border-Fey, where Lavellans are considered pests. They are also widely available in communities with strong ties to the Feywild, such as Aisling's Rest. In the rest of the Material Plane, they are considered a luxury item and are harder to come by, making them more expensive than other types of medical bandage. In parts of North Eirinn where the Silver Hand hold sway, they are heavily restricted due to their magical nature so only certain places can trade them, and it is illegal for anyone non-military or without a Permit of Nobility to own them.

Significance

Lavellan Dressings are considered an Advanced piece of Adventuring Kit that revolutionised exploration for Advanced Explorers and Adventurers. While most adventurers avoid them due to the cost, expeditions to known danger zones, particularly in the Silver Wastes and the Wyld Floes, almost always insist that at least a third of the bandage supplies include Lavellan Dressings.
