The Plaid Banner

The Plaid Banner, is an elite cavalry unit that specializes in a variety of skill sets including reconnaissance and scouting as well as secondary battlefield management to aid front-line troops and are also trusted to escort high ranking officials both military and civilian when the need arises.
It is considered rare for the Banner to see actual direct front line combat, usually something has gone seriously wrong with the tide of the conflict for them to need to muster and charge the open field in significant numbers.

Composition

Manpower

The Plaid Banner is roughly 200 strong, with another two dozen serving in the command and training structures as well as about 100 support units tending to the needs of the Banner's encampment, stables, etc. making for about 350 members in total.

Equipment

The unit is provided all the necessary equipment to tend to their horses and to their missions successfully, as well as a variety of weapons and tools to match their training. Maps, note taking materials, spycraft, and more are all made available dependent upon the mission being undertaken.

Weaponry

From bows and lances to arcane foci like rods and staffs for those more inclined to spellcasting, the range of weapons the Plaid Banner utilizes covers a wide range to suit their talents and the needs of the task at hand.

Vehicles

Every member of the Plaid Banner is issued a horse, one with which they form a deep personal bond. The function as one, as in sync with each other as any wizard's familiar could ever hope to be.

Structure

The Banner during normal circumstances will function in small groups often just one or two members operating independently or in conjunction with normal troops to facilitate a mission.
When the Banner must take to the front lines of a battle as a cohesive force they will typically function in units of 20 under a coordinator, with two coordinators answering to a leader and the five leaders answering to their company commander

Training

Most of the ongoing training efforts within the banner are focused of learning new information, geography, topography, surrounding peoples, etc. as the empire's control expands they must commit all of the territory to memory so they can execute their duties satisfactorily.
