Red Window Settlement in The Void Between | World Anvil

Red Window

Hello Lorne…
I'm smiling, I know. I didn't know I could do it either. That's kind of what I wanted to talk about. I've included coordinates, as well as relevant information on a strange settlement we found on the edge of the galactic community.   We were invited planetside without the slightest mention of who we were. They knew who we were, of course. Those living here saw us not as monsters, but people in desperate need of peace. That sticks with you.   The settlement is named Pou'frz, on the planet of… hell I can't even attempt to pronounce it. It translates to The red window, a nod to the color of curtains made from a flower used by the locals. I say locals, but there are no forms of sentient life native to the planet. Everyone who lives there is foreign.

Pleasure world

This settlement is one of many, all selling the same thing to keep the money flowing. Staying a night on the planet is quite an experience.   While there are brothels aplenty, they aren't the main attraction. You want to visit the Youa, the red rooms. You enter the room alone, and won't be leaving for the entire night. Food and drink will be brought to you when asked for, and you can stay for as long as your wallet allows.   The plant life on this planet is highly hallucinogenic, and it tends to stir the libido, but with a twist. It always ties to deeply emotional experiences. Sexual activity need not apply. There are many here who visit the Yaoa just to see spouses, friends, or family who died. It's almost like they never left.

visions

If you were you, I know the first thing you would ask is what did I see. What is the source of such unexpected happiness? That's private, but seeing how you'll never get this, I guess I'll divulge.   I saw the earth before the fall. I saw my friends, my daughter, and my parents. I even saw you, before the incident of course. It was surreal to say the least.   Past that I honestly don't know where to start. It's a shame. You're like the tin man, now. You wouldn't be affected. It's gotta be seen to be believed.

Tho'yume

The main source of cloth is a small plant called Tho'yume. It's a weed, and grows in abundance. The plant is extremely soft, softer than silk. The bed sheets, carpet, clothes… everything is made from it   The name actually referred to a cryptid believed to live on the planet. That's a fun story. Apparently some xenophile came here, had a sordid encounter with a previously unknown species, which is not recommended, and told everyone about this strange race living, and loving, on the planet's surface.   The tale spread far and wide, and this one person's hallucination became fact. For years, people actually believed the species existed. The species always looked humanoid with smooth features and pure white skin. Their bodies were patterned with red stripes and out of their heads sprouted what sounded to me like elephant ears. It's just as odd as it sounds.

That's just brilliant: someone's hallucination generates a huge wave of interest. Talk about lowest common denominator!!!

I want to go there....deserperatly. do the hallucinations have to be of something you've seen or could they be of, say, a world you read about? or even written about? asking for a friend :)

You should check out the The 5 Shudake, if you want of course.

It wiped be an amazing place to go for sure. As for the question, It really depends.   It would need to be something deeeeeeply emotional and vividly imagined. Fictional subjects would be possible for sure, but not for everyone. Some just dont have a vivid enough imagination for it.

Haha, wow, that's quite a bizarre hallucination the person had! But ouch, poor Invicta, I had no idea she had a daughter. :O

Thank ya! This is the first she's mentioned her daughter. Lots of pain there. She understandbly doesnt talk about it much.

Definitely understandable! Losing someone you love is always difficult.

The sad truth. Thank so much my friend!

Sounds suspicously similar to the effect the sin eaters have on their victims... There could be a link here. The conspiracy theories are beginning to flow... things are just beginning to make sense...-ish. I'm not quite there yet.   If we assume that these tow are indeed similar but opposite effects, then the meaning of the phrases 'broke into heaven' and 'broke into hell' could begin to align much more clearly. The sin-eaters are associated with a constant feeling of guilt, and this planet is associated with a constant feeling of happiness. would that make this planet...   Earth?

WHO KNOWS?! i have no idea. could be, or maybe a red herring. I plead the fifth. lol except earth. it is not earth. i can say that. XD thanks once again my friend.

I like the twist you added with the hallucinations. I can imagine the thought of seeing deceased loved ones again appeals to many, and perhaps can become a bit of an addiction. I also like how you slowly add details about Invicta, making us remember she was once human, with a family and friends. Probably an entirely different person than she is now. I hope to one day find out how Invicta and the Archivist know each other. What they were to each other back on Earth.

I absolutely love the direction you took this prompt! Using the red rooms to see loved ones who had died -- it's really touching. Really great stuff here, I love it.

Haha, that cryptid. I can see that happening on Earth, for sure.   This is a really fun idea of a pleasure planet. I can definitely see why people would go there to experience that.

I love the idea of the initial hallucination being taken as fact for so long!
