Ancient Riftbeing Remains

An important artefact that may explain a modern mystery

In 322 of the Second Age, a team of paleontologists from the University of Devnest carefully excavated an ancient riftbeing specimen in a dig site not far from the coast in the Nedilah peninsula of Anvil. The fossil is believed to have come from a time before the Age of the Unknown, around the same time when whatever events caused the cataclysmic scars to cut through the uninhabited landscapes of Melior.   Until the recent events of The Rupture just over fifty years ago, this perfectly preserved riftbeing fossil was unlike any living species ever seen. Encased in its natural sandstone tomb, this terrifying predator once stood as tall as a house and had sharp teeth the size of shortswords.

Connecting The Dots

Now more than ever it has become an extremely valuable asset to The Jolundrian Empire in their research into how riftbeings have returned to Melior. Scholars are looking into connections between the devastating ongoing eruption of Mt. Darvus in Anvil and the occurance of the rifts to see if they are somehow related, as rifts had not appeared in Melior before then.   The discovery is significant in the history of The Empire as it proves that there was a time long ago where riftbeings hunted in Melior. At some point they must have died out when the ancient rifts were closed, meaning that this new invasion of riftbeings has happened once before and can hopefully be stopped again.
This remarkable specimen has sparked the imagination of curious minds and scholars across The Jolundrian Empire for years due to the asymmetrical nature of the being. Before the invasion, no other species on the planet had this level of natural deformity.   Many fantasy monsters in children’s tales and stories are inspired by this fossil, but now the bedtime horrors have become a walking reality.

I can't help from feeling a bit envious of your ability to be concise yet effective. I tend to feel so verbose for most of my articles. Good job!

I love that the fossils have inspired children's stories, and also that it can be used for some research.

There is so much information in such a small space, and it really feels like these could have existed with the level of information given. Just enough to feel like the world recognizes them but also enough mystery to highlight the unknown. I love it.

You should check out the The 5 Shudake, if you want of course.
