Correspondence Between Vhul'xo The Immortal & Odessa Deo

The following are a series of letters written between The Lich King and mage named Odessa, exchanged over the course of many months.
Exchanged soon after Odessa rose from the dead following a challenge against The Lich King in a bid to gain his sponsorship.
Vhul'xo   This has taken a turn I don't think either of us expected. I'm dead, that hasn't changed, you killed me quickly and painlessly, yet here I am still. Whilst the death was accepted, I did know the risks after all, it seems an errant thought latched onto something.   I'm a skeleton now, formerly flesh and blood, now just bone. The glow behind my 'eyes' suggests this is Olsir's doing, at least partially, but as is normal there's been little mention from her about it.   From what I've gathered, either deliberately or accidentally, when you killed me you instilled necrotic energies into my body with the intention of resurrecting me, subservient. That is not fully the case, it was difficult to accomplish say the least, but I am of my own mind. I feel no allegiance to you nor reverence beyond what was formerly felt.   I'm writing to you out of a sense of need to, as this is partially your doing. Writing and not mentally communicating due to knowing full well my will cannot best yours without aid and not knowing the risks involved with attempting to connect with your mind.   I am owed nothing, knowing I've given little and taken more than expected, but I would try to appeal to your sense of responsibility all the same. I am undead, I can hide it all I wish but eventually it shall be discovered, I would ask for written acknowledgement from you that I am not a mindless monster to be exterminated. I would also ask that no contact be made beyond through proxies, as we both know what will occur if we are near to one another. I would request that no intervention take place unless it is deemed required and when I deem myself strong enough, then I request a meeting, to see if I am correct.   Odessa Deo, Gnosan Academic.

Odessa,   Your reanimation was deliberate; your conviction impressed me, and it felt a shame to rob the world such a bright, dedicated young mind as yours.   Your awakening was sensed; I am pleased to know you retain your independence. As I departed your abode I felt The Stars at work, so despite her silence Olsír indeed assisted in keeping your soul intact. You may wish to give thanks at a temple next time you pass one.   Your requests are acknowledged; you may wear the attached brooch with pride. It will both serve to notify others you are under my sponsorship for any matters relating to necromancy, and glow whensoever we are close enough for your soul to be endangered.   With anticipation for our next meeting, Vhul'xo

Exchanged following Odessa's dream in which she spoke to a lesser deity.
I had a conversation with the Empyrean of Magic and after that I think some non-living aid will be of great use. I know of ways to summon powerful or plentiful undead but not the specifics beyond the included spell and who better to ask than you?   I would kindly request knowledge on how to summon sizable amounts of undead or ways the included spell could be improved, I also understand the knowledge will likely not be free and would be interested in knowing how it could be paid for.   The spell is of curiosity to me because it does not utilise undead as I know most spells to do so and researching it has been difficult, my day will be spent in greater research and an experts understanding would be of great use.

Your conversation is unexpected; The North Star does not often speak with mortals. I would like to learn of what you discussed, if I may.   Your spell is atypical; as you say, most necromantic spells require a body to animate when creating servants, while this spell functions almost more like conjuration magic. It calls forth a soul from The Underworld and shapes it as needed.   Such magic is a double-edged blade; the spirit grows automatically more powerful the more energy you put into it, removing the need to find stronger or larger bodies to animate, but the spell holds it for a shorter time. It serves quite well for combative engagements, though I recognise you are seeking longer term summons as well.   Your request is noted; there are several methods to animating a force, though often the most reliable is simply time. I need no payment, but would pose a challenge: if you can keep my skeletons safe for a full month while they begin to excavate your pass, I will teach you more necromancy.   Awaiting your response, Vhul'xo

Our conversation was upon matters such as Telio's sudden rise, the Green Knight's strange powers - which he attributed to the Knight's potential origins and determination not unlike an Oathkeeper, and the known fact that the Gods are beginning to act more and more in recent times.   Would a soul summoned in such a way be unwilling or is it akin to summoning demons? Either way I presume it would be possible with stronger magics to bind its service for longer, not that I currently know how. Would it also attract Haroch's attention? As much as I've done so before in the past without worry, I'd rather not also gain his ire whilst the Gods begin to act more themselves and not through champions.   For the work-force you've offered for the pass, when are they expected to arrive and where specifically? If it's soon then I'll have to change my plans to ensure their safety, which isn't an issue, I simply don't wish to be trapped in the Festival of Change when they arrive.

Telio's rising is concerning, but not unexpected; it is his right to seek a return to greatness, and we will not interfere unless he acts in a way that endangers other's lives.   This Green Knight remains an oddity beyond our sight; I imagine most of us would like to meet him to learn more about his power. What has The North Star said about his origins?   The Gods' movements are known; between that, the appearance of the Green Knight, and both Praelos and monster-kind growing bolder, we seem to be living in interesting times. If any issue grows too large, one of us will likely step in, though Zarligantír is already seeking to empower our Assembly of Mages so they can deal with such threats themselves.   This spell is akin to casting a lure into an arcane pond; some souls may be taken unaware of its true nature and unwilling to serve, others may understand it to be temporary release to our world. With practice I'm sure you will learn to summon the same spirit each time, and from there you might learn to bind it for greater durations.   Your fears are not unfounded; all necromancy risks upsetting The Shadow, but if you seek to advance in this field you must be brave. Though Haroch himself so far has remained amongst the most passive of the Gods, if this changes I'm sure I will be amongst the first to know.   My work-force awaits my command; once you let me know you are ready to begin excavation, I will open a gateway to you and send them through.   With enjoyment for our correspondence,   Vhul'xo

He wasn't entirely sure himself but his thoughts are that the Knight is connected to the Archons in some way, that he is a homunculus or other creation of some kind. He also noted that he does not take power from any known source, which is how he remains hidden from the Gods, and in fact fuels himself with his beliefs independently.   Much like my familiar, the spirits I've summoned with the spell dislike conversation. Is that a matter of subconsciously I don't allow that or is it a matter innate to said spell?   I will convince my fellow city planners to begin our actual work after the festival whether they like it or not. I shall be sure to let you know when we are ready for the workers, and I'm sure Periklis will be eager for that time.

This news is concerning; the Archons are long dead, and the only group with any real ties to them has eluded our grasp so far.   To fuel oneself with singular faith alone is unheard of; the Gods borrow power from others, and even we needed to learn and grow, to improve our skill and magics over time.   Your observation is intelligent; though, it may in fact be neither. It is more likely that after untold time in The Underworld it simply takes a while to remember spoken language. If you can summon the same spirit a few times they will likely learn to speak.   Your statements are humorous; I myself look forward to you starting as well.   I would make my first true request as your sponsor; prioritise this green man's capture next time you meet. I would accept this as payment even if my work-force is destroyed.   Vhul'xo

I don't think I knew of an organisation linked to them still existing, removing the idea that the Riders are in any way capable of organising.   Would there be any specific way to ensure the same spirit is summoned every time? Would be as simple as trying to bring a similar connection each time?   Annoyingly the Knight can neither be spied upon nor telepathically spoken to, as much as it would be a personal failure of the request it may be worth asking Aesk if he has found them yet, as he had an interest to talk with them. The Knight would also be willing to accept any form of meeting you ask of him, if he can be found, if not then the requests have to be placed through one of his followers however the only one able to contact him is the one unwilling to allow for such a meeting, it would be deemed too much of a risk.

Your ignorance was by design; they call themselves The Lords of Ash and Dust, and have operated in the shadows for so long that only a few know of them. They are not Archons, but those who worshipped them before the war, and seem to be searching for a way to resurrect their masters.   These Lords are dangerous; I am telling you of them now as this Green Knight may be their latest and most potent method of testing their limits. I suspect the Rider summoned in Chyreum last year and the destruction of Acidon were their doing as well.   Your theory is well-founded; I believe using an object beloved to the deceased you are trying to summon would help as well.   Aesk has been contacted; they have found the aftermath of the Knight's travels in Western mountains, but not the man himself. It seems he has been spending some time attacking gladiators and monster hunters in the area. I will request they make it known we seek an audience.   Vhul'xo

Then it seems, whether liked or not, the fates of myself and my crewmates are linked to the fates of these Lords with our presence and actions dispelling two of their plotted attempts. As would Zykida's if Zia has any say, I would expect. I don't think the Knight has any direct connection to them beyond his potential creation, at least not that he knows of as his goal is the protection and safety of all creatures.   For gaining a reliable spirit willing to be summoned it seems I'll have to study magics to speak to the dead and directly ask if they would accept such an offer, then finding an object would be as simple as hoping they remember what their most beloved possession would be.   On that note, actually, I recently discovered that Kreon the Headless Captain may be open to communication and potentially more. It was only a subtle motion, but he openly acknowledged attempts to communicate with him when he returned to collect his axe we had in our possession. At times it has proven difficult to know what is in command of his collection of undead, Kreon himself or his axe.

I wish you luck with such a fate; the Lords are manipulators and magicians skilled enough to evade even our passive reach. Perhaps this Knight may lead you to them, even accidentally?   Your path is clear; I have confidence that you will succeed in finding a fitting spirit.   Kreon is a curiosity; the nature of his curse is split, fractured like a mirror. I will say no more on Kreon, for I believe you can conquer this obstacle without my aid, and to give more information would rob you of the achievement.   Vhul'xo

I believe Kreon has a long wish to finally die, I know plenty of his crew wish for their deaths, but his curse extends his path and his patron takes great pleasure in watching his revenant champion. Now that we hold an understanding of how he acts and what powers he holds I'm very confident in our ability to free him in time. I simply hope that the first rule Kanzu breaks in retaliation for my Godly conversation isn't to provide Kreon with more benefits.   For another topic. My apprentice, Penelope, has very recently developed into a pure Vampire instead of the diseased creations Lucian Mors accidentally makes in his attempts to understand his own alchemy. I take it very few Immortals would take an interest in her when her powers develop to the appropriate level for sponsorship.

Your apprentice is gifted; given a few years to develop her vampiric abilities, I'm sure she would be watched over by Osera. Lucian himself was, after all. Has he been made aware of the development? Such knowledge would likely aid his research, though you are not required to tell him - you are Penelope's master, not him.   Vhul'xo

I know for full fact that if Lucian was to be informed currently then Penelope's life would be as a test subject. He only allowed her to live due to my stubbornness and an agreement that any of my studies that may be of use to him be shared with him. Unfortunately those studies cannot be performed by me anymore due to my lack of blood and current disinterest in alchemy, so instead the deal is maintained by allowing him to have first choice of any ingredients and components I have no plans for myself.   If he was to learn currently that Penelope accidentally became what he wished to perfect then I have no doubts he would find greater use in her personally than whatever I could offer, so until such a time as it can be proven notes gathered on her abilities gained in the field are of greater use than what he could gather from experimenting upon her, he will not be informed by me.

Your caution is understandable; I fully trust you to decide what is best for your apprentice.   Until we speak again,   Vhul'xo

Sent following the "capture" of Cuidightheach Tròcaireach by Vhul'xo.
This Knight is an enigma; almost as soon as we departed from you he disappeared from my view. I was aware that he was still there, notice things he interacted with, but the man himself along with his presence vanished from all my senses.   Tests were conducted; others I brought in could interact with him beside myself. Only I could not sense him, all other subjects, including the Knight himself could deal with everyone else.   The method is unusual; there are times I can almost detect him, as though he resides permanently just outside of my peripheral. Further, it seems this effect began to grow in the moments after I temporarily killed the strangers you were with. I suspect it is based upon how the Knight views his conversation partners, which based upon our previous talks implies he inherently despises the Gods if they cannot see him either.   My apologies are required; there was no intention to cause lasting harm to those strangers. I wished to force the Knight's hand, to take his measure and force him into following me.   Until I know more,   Vhul'xo

Sent a few days after Fearghal's capture.
The Knight is meddlesome; despite his agreement to remain close, twice now he has escaped his guards to release one of my experiments, only to return before a full alert is sounded. The method for doing so is different to his avoiding my gaze; he simply seems to be fairly silent despite the size of his armour - a testament to the value of mithral, I presume.   The Knight is well concealed; he remains often in the same room as myself while my subordinates study him, yet for all the mysteries to be unlocked I fear he learns more of me than I of him. Even his very blood appears immune to divination, and his own knowledge is sparse; he has no idea where his power comes from, what his past is, or how to consciously hide or reveal himself to those he meets.   The Knight is bold; with each passing day he speaks to my workers as though they are friends, asking them if they are satisfied with their situation. I suspect that, were they still alive or conjured by harsher masters, he would be planting the seeds of rebellion flagrantly in front of my eyes.   The Knight seeks release; he has asked if I would still hold the lives of others hostage in order to keep him near, or if there is some way he might barter for a way to leave without endangering the folk nearby. Before I make any decision, I am curious as to what you would do in my stead?   Once you have responded, I shall explain what has been learned of his capabilities thus far.   Vhul'xo

My fate is defined both by you and Olsir herself now, if I had my way in your position I would have him work alongside other forces to build our cities. However, that risks angering Olsir if I continue interacting with him without conflict.   Instead, what I would have him do is to have him face a potential past, have him face an Ashen Rider. With full expectation of his survival I would also ask him to engage deeply with his own source of power, if it is of a malevolent kind he may weaken himself with the contradiction.   Ultimately, the final bond I would wager for his freedom is to be entered into the coliseum. He wishes for the safety of the beasts, he could ensure that and help his 'friends' in the process.

Firstly,   The Knight is powerful by your standards; all attempts to magically divine his strength have failed, but mundane tests have been performed. I am sure you know some of this, but here are my findings thus far:
  • He exudes life, as I exude death. Flora springs up around his feet, wounded fauna recover rapidly, and even my own aura seems temporarily supressed in his presence. While the ability to hold flowers for the first time in centuries is appreciated, that he can counteract my ambient power at all is concerning.
  • His conscious mastery of life magics is noteworthy. He was able to create vines strong enough to subdue one of my undead giants while simultaneously coating large areas in shredding thorns. Trees of any size bend to his will, and his ability to heal others rivals the greatest priests of our age.
  • I have reason to believe that his ability to keep your soul safe from my presence was down to nothing more than the fact he had promised to do so. By his vow and his desire to protect he grants himself power to do so.
  • I have never met a mortal with such endurance before. While I could not use my most powerful spells due to having no target, he seemed resistant to all but the greatest of area based magics. After a day spent battling my forces, he had received an uncountable number of what should have been fatal blows. Yet, reportedly covered in unreasonable amounts of his own blood, he never once faltered or showed fear of any kind. Whether by some otherworldly nature or sheer force of will alone, a score of wraiths and more could not finish him off even while weakened at the end of his trial.
  • His physical and offensive abilities are somewhat impressive for a mortal, but seem rather lacking in comparison to his fortitude. Unless he finds a way to cause greater harm, I foresee no real danger from this man, especially coupled with how easy it is to manipulate him.
Overall, his most impressive features are his endurance, willpower, and concealment from our senses. That he seeks our undoing is humorous; he is no match for any of us, save perhaps the presently weakened Telío.   If you care for this man's life, do what you can to dissuade him from his path; an encounter with Osera or Zarligantír will lead to his death, for they care less about studying others than I.   Vhul'xo

I respect your ideas and your position; his ability to create life would be valuable in many areas, though the problems he would cause for both yourself and others involved likely outweigh his value, at least in the very short term.   A Rider has been located, though I cannot teleport him without use of the Gate spell; when I attempt to touch him no true physical contact is made, so spells that require it fail, and weaker portals such as Teleportation Circles will not accept him. I am soon needed elsewhere for some time, so I shall give him his instructions and Gate him close to his quarry.   Entry to the Colosseum is bold; as mentioned I will be away from the Varolian during the upcoming festival, but I have explained this condition for his release. I expect he will uphold this agreement as best he can, though whether he will arrive to Chyreum without my aid in time after killing the Rider is yet to be seen.   Vhul'xo

Either on the assumption I fulfilled the request to delivering the Knight to you or the greater assumption I'll have no issue defending the workforce if you don't deem the first truthfully completed, I thought it best to note down what kinds of knowledge I would most wish to gain.   The priority, perhaps understandably, would be a way to advance my Necromancy into useful ways. Extending durations of summoning or controlling, greater amounts summoned or controlled even if they're less effective, both especially for utility fashions as I suspect raising armies of the undead for combat would earn me few allies even with your approval of doing so.   Despite the preference for utility use I would not deny an opportunity to learn a way of an extended raising like Periklis exhibits, a more self-sustaining aid. I am still fixing broken bones gained from an encounter with an angry tree and would quite enjoy having someone to take the stronger hits for me who, like me, has no strong concern of death.   A third suggestion if offered has to remain as just that, instead of a request, as it's a very bold ask even more me. I would ask for knowledge on Lichdom, although not how to gain it. I would ask for your experiences from it, the benefits and the negatives, the quirks and the curiosities. Purely because, as I believe would be freely known by now, Lichdom is my ultimate goal but I seek to gain it in a fashion different than the stories would tell of how to. I also don't seek the knowledge itself as I could not class myself as a great mage if I simply copied those stronger than I am.

Your assumption is correct; while I am allowing the knight to go free for now, you did deliver him as requested.   You already have access to larger forces; though it takes some time to set up, the Animate Dead spell in your tome can control multiple skeletons at once for a day at a time. If this does not satisfy, a spell I created many centuries ago, while still a young and mortal man may be to your preference. It is named Danse Macabre; it animates several undead at a once and imbues them with some of your own power, ensuring they have the edge over other skeletons, though they will not last as long. I believe your home has a copy of the spell somewhere hidden away. Feel free to tell them I grant you permission to trade for it.   Notably powerful or eternally controlled undead are currently beyond your reach; there are spells you will encounter in time to create or animate soldiers permanently, and rituals we may discuss upon my return to temporarily animate stronger creatures.   My experiences may be unhelpful; I left behind the lesser Lichdom you seek long eons ago. From what I recall, however, there is little that can prepare you for the hunger you will feel, for it is unlike any starvation a mortal could even imagine. It will consume your mind, if you let it, but the assurance of immortality and the power it will bring are in my view more than worth it.   Your goal is ambitious; I will not say it is impossible, for nothing truly is, but be mindful of your skillset. You have specialised in the process of accessing many forms of magics and manipulating them intently, altering the energies of your spells as they leave your body. This is a valuable ability to hone, but it is neither necromancy nor related to necromancy. The standard pathway will be difficult enough, so ensure you are aware of your capabilities before seek another method.   Vhul'xo

It did not feel right adding this onto the other letter, as it is more of a philosophical observation than anything else.   I'm not arrogant enough to proclaim myself the champion, or even a favorite of Olsir, I'll leave that for others to do for me. What I am curious enough to question is how much of her attention I gather.   No Guardians in the Sanctuary enjoys even a minor amount of self control for their love of detonating things outside of the walls, but somehow whilst an entire wandering collection of goblinoids was reduces to cinders I was left unharmed when just a baby. Nobody at the Sanctuary ensured that during the blitz, it was simply curious eyes that found me alive afterwards.   Then with my upbringing l showed an aptitude completely rare for an non-inherently magical race such as mine.   After I left, it was timed perfectly for my magics to be instrumental in reducing the impact of the attempted assassination in Chyreum, and if not my magics then my stubbornness to perform said magics perfectly or my lack of worry about engaging in illegal blood magics.   In the past year, even acknowledging the dangers I throw myself in with my allies, my growth and scale of power has increased exponentially to where I strongly believe I'm slowly losing any equal amongst mortals for all that I specialise in.   Which has now required the mention of said specialties. I learn as a Wizard but to the extent that I can freely modify any spell I can cast. I have gained innate abilities, some I believe gained from my connection to you as I feel the cold hand of death whenever I cast them, and now some divine magics that I can shape and manipulate as if they were written in my book by me years ago. I've bridged gaps plenty thought impossible to bridge.   But I have to question how much of it is actually me. Olsir's child openly granted me powers and I gain from you by nature as your resurrected undead. How much is it actually my potential and power and how much is merely gifted to me?   Enough has happened to have me confident that something is expected of me, the perfect example is how Olsir actively acted to allow me to keep my mind when I became undead.   Sedrom himself stated that we/I walk the path Fate has set for us without straying from it, but where does the path lead? And why does it seemingly lead only ever higher towards the stars?   I know it's unlikely you'll have definite answers, but you have experienced more than I could possibly imagine and suspect you could offer some insights.

Your initial survival was auspicious beyond coincidence; there is no doubt that you have been deliberately saved numerous times.   Your skills with magic are understandable; your kin are often capable of impressive ambition and creativity, but their military society does not often allow for great works or workers of magic. Growing up in an environment of scholars may be the only explanation you need for your gifts, though Olsír's hand guides all mortal mages and cannot be dismissed, especially in your case.   Your growth is remarkable; though you may yet have plenty of equals and betters in the City of Magic, you have still risen to the heights in Teráka with rare speed. For some, facing constant danger slows their improvement or forces early retirement, for others it accelerates them in ways that have not been well studied. You and your friends are clearly of the latter kind, though from my perspective it seems obvious that your path has been purposefully filled with risks to hasten your evolution.   Your question on what power is yours has two options; did you become great because Olsír chose you, or did Olsír choose you because she knew you were destined for greatness regardless? Though this may not be a satisfactory answer, it is likely a combination of the two. In my experience, Olsír would not put so much effort into personally saving a fool or weakling, meaning that she has seen your potential and decided to nurture it. As for how much of your power belongs to me; your life is mine, but your magic is only mine in the same way that Lucian's is Osera's, or Miss Xanthe's abilities are Zarligantír's. We sponsor mortal mages, sometimes offer them scraps of potential or insight, but their achievements are their own.   The purpose of Olsír sponsoring you? Of the Gods placing many and mighty dangers in front of your group? As we have recently discussed, many factions now have either appeared or ceased their idling; it may be that a great upheaval is due, and that the Gods have little faith in the five of us, or at least wish for their own weapons to fight, either alongside or against us.   Wait for my next message before contacting me again; your letters and magics will likely not reach me until I return, and I would not wish for you to waste your resources.   Vhul'xo

Delivered following the finale of Chyreum's Festival of Change - 674 MA
Your Festival has ended; I hope that you performed well, and that Aesk's creature did not pose too great a threat.   Please inform Periklis if the Knight arrived in time; I do not expect him to have done so, as I delivered him far away from Chyreum in the hopes of learning more of his abilities.   I am still elsewhere; our reason for absency has been extended, though Zarligantír will return, alone for the time being. As I am not there to transport my forces, in my stead, Periklis has been instructed to give you two items: a blackened heart and a dagger. Keep these safe from theft, for the heart alone holds value greater than your trading ship.   Their usage is thus; once you have arrived at the location you wish to build your city, pierce the heart and allow its blood to flow into the soil around you. The dead shall rise, and whoever holds the heart may command them.   This replacement for my own forces is imperfect; the skeletons animated by the heart are violent unless commanded once each day, and may only be given simple commands as a collective rather than as individuals. Still, I believe they will suffice for any basic tasks of great scope, such as excavating your passageway or collecting nearby resources.   I wish you luck with your city building, and will inform you upon my return. Vhul'xo

Exchanged following Vhul'xo's return to The Varolian some time around the Summer Solstice.
We have returned; the tasks that required our absence have been attended to, and so this correspondence may continue mutually once again.   Zarligantír informed me you sought to speak with him; while he has been extremely busy in our absence, now that we have returned he may find spare hours in the days to come. If you believe an audience with him would be of great importance, I could request his time on your behalf.   The Praetorian Mage informed me of your visit; I understand your reasons, but would request you respect Praelos' territory. A mage teleporting into their land risks an escalation of their war, and few of us wish to participate in the genocide of their people that a full invasion would cause.   I sense the beating of the heart; I hope it has served you well thus far, and that its risen have not proven difficult or dangerous to control. Inform me if they are not sufficient for your needs, and I will bolster the heart's forces with my own.   Awaiting your response, Vhul'xo

I shall trust you plan not inform me of what your business entailed and that it has all gone well, welcome back to the Varolian.   Contacting Zarligantir was more of a preparation for the future than any other requirement, in consideration that the first city we are building shall be dedicated to Kiderha. It is unlikely I will actively require an audience with him before his likely arrival to our proposed city, but I preferred to not leave that bridge unbuilt for much too longer.   I would not have visited Praelos in such a manner, if at all, if it were not for the need to travel quickly in order to not abandon my slowly blossoming city for too long. Even if the journey proved to not be the greatest use of my time.   For the work force, they are quite useful for simple tasks. They have allowed for quick progress in the building of foundations, even if we had to enact clever plans to work around their hive mind commands. As time is progressing, however, they are slowly being spread thin in a way as to have their simple nature prove a burden. As we have very few residents, the undead are the majority of the workforce, and as such we are beginning to require them to build foundations, mine in both a quarry and soon a silver mine, and act as de facto security. If they could be improved I would not say no, especially as they will also be required for the creation of the travel-way soon enough as well once we have more residents.   On that topic, however, I would open the offer for any of your other sponsors and followers who would enjoy a home they must work to improve. However it should also be known that there are plans to invite and grow with the help of the Justicars, to offer them a place that allows them to work with non-abusive mages in the policing of those who may abuse their powers errantly, this would restrict the offer to those you know that would not fall prey to their forceful eyes immediately.

Your desire to make connections is understandable; as you grow in influence I suspect you will begin to receive many requests of your own. Zarligantír enjoys socialising far moreso than any of us, so I'm sure you will get your chance in time.   The heart is unfinished; I did not have the time or spare ingredients before needing to depart previously, but I will visit your city the next time I am available to complete my work. It will take more time than simply adding my own skeletons, but will grant you greater control.   Your invitation is appreciated; though I have no currently displaced apprentices seeking a home, I will inform you if that changes.   Your invitation to the Justicars is surprising; they are a rogue faction that is rarely given the time of day by most. You may find some difficulty recruiting mages if the Justicars accept, regardless of how upstanding they are.   Until we next speak, Vhul'xo

Your presence shall be welcome, although I would ask a warning so that I can vacate the location for my own safety.   The Justicars are partially correct in their beliefs, I believe, and therefore working alongside them to relax their fury and prove that not all of their targets are truly worth the hunt is a worthwhile endeavour. I am sure many mages will dislike the notion of their accepted presence, but I am confident there may be some that will welcome the safety they bring, perceived or truthful, from superior mages that may wish to sabotage their just work for their own goals.   Be assured, they will not be given courtesy if they try to throw around more weight than they will be given.

Exchanged after Vhul'xo arrived in Chyreum to discuss the recent carnage caused by Fearghal.
In all that occurred and thanks to the public setting, I forgot to ask some questions during your visit to Chyreum, and so for ease I'll list them here for you to respond to at your leisure.   The first is the least important but has the majority of my curiosity. What is it hidden beneath the gardens between the towers of eight in Olsiri? Nobody can or will tell me, and the vague responses have made me wish to know more and not less. Although a promise was made to cease my investigations if even you will not tell me, in this way it is entirely up to you whether my curiosity is sated or if I will have to wait until the future to learn.   The second is perhaps the most important, and varied. With the state of the Republic being as it is, with the Katarnites and the Olsirans creating more of a wedge between themselves as days pass, what happens if the Republic enters into a civil war? No doubt Protos will take the opportunity presented to it and make things worse, no doubt if Fearghal is not stopped early he will play a major role in what will inevitably occur. What happens to the opposing sides? Will you or another Immortal rain down magic destruction or oppression upon Katarn to quell it quickly or will you leave the conflict to lead where it wishes? As both a mage of some power and skill yet also a priest given leave to speak for the enforcers of cosmic law by Olsiri and her Eldest, where would I have to stand? Alongside my arcane siblings in opposition to zealots or amongst my theocratic siblings in opposition to those still beholden yet defiant to the will of the Gods? Then if push turns to shove and something must be done to ensure a fracturing does not occur, would I have to stand opposed to you or another Immortal if I end forced to enact the God driven law against the frankly bumbling council within Olsiri? Would, if I must uphold some law, be expected to feel the weight of a separate law upon my own person in retaliation?   I ask not because I am afraid of what may occur as many others may be if they ask these questions. After all, despite the notion of others finding the view foolish I don't fear what will happen. I ask purely because from an entirely logical point, I must understand my position before that time comes in order to fulfil whatever duty will befall me.   Odessa ton Asterion, Speaker of the Stars.   Of potential additional interest unrelated. Since accepting the mantle I have been unable to say my full name, instead feeling the urge to use the epithet instead. It seems through writing this letter I have discovered I am also incapable of even writing it.

You are a seeker of truth; this is an admirable quality in most situations, but a dangerous one in others. The secret beneath The Octagon was never meant for mortal eyes, but I will not stop your searching. The path to this truth overflows with peril, and so by finding it you prove yourself worthy of knowing.   We allowed Praelos to secede long centuries ago; this was done to grant safe haven to those who disagree with our arcane way of life, a more humane alternative to slaughtering thousands every time a plebian rebellion happens. Should Prótos attempt to follow the same path, we have no plans to personally intercede, though it is likely the pride of Olsíri would force them into war.   Your position is less hazardous than one would expect; as a Mage your loyalty is to The Republic, while Prótos' formentings are from the mortals who worship The Gods, not The Gods themselves. Should Olsír, or her children, personally ask you to choose a side, then you must make a difficult choice; until then, you would be expected to settle unrest as a Mágos first, and Ágios second.   An attack upon The Senate of any region is an attack upon The Republic itself; if such unlikely events conspire to place you violently opposed to The Senate of Olsíri, regardless of their aptitude, it would be my responsibility to punish you as your sponsor. It is my hope that Olsír would not resort to such measures.   Your candor is appreciated; many would keep these thoughts to themselves for fear of being branded as a traitorous thinker. I am glad you felt safe enough to ask these questions, and welcome any further inquiry.   Your epithet has been granted; you speak for The Aether, and this proves her active hold on you is now greater than my own passive one.   I will arrive in Chálkináti by the 9th of Édas, providing no emergencies require my attention.   Vhul'xo

Exchanged during Odessa's adventures within The Heart of Creation
I've not attempted to send a letter from an inherently divine location before so I do hope this works as it usually does.   Vhul'xo, I find it both curious and unsurprising that those plates of knowledge you misplaced came from such a place as Katas' forge, and I wonder if there was some form of plan to have us return them to their place in your stead? In truth, this letter is far more of an explanation of happenings as well as a kind request on an offer priorly given than most of our correspondence in times past.   A strange scenario is beginning to unravel itself, one which amuses me more so than it worries me and it worries me greatly. Cassandra and Alek of the Champions have collectively decided that Zia's hold on her Champion is growing too firm and needs to be forcibly laxed in some way. Knowing what I do of both Aasimar and Zykida herself, I would have to agree with them, Zia seeks to strip Zykida of the quality that has her Aasimar instead of Angel.   When Zia was asked why through simple prayer, her response was loosely interpreted as preparing for war, perhaps as fitting for her. Of course I would much rather Zia not stride into another conflict, the Gods limit themselves for 'our' safety after all.   For my personal interaction with it I find yet another strange crossroads. Olsir saw it fit to help Zia weaponize her champion truly by having me assist her in one of her trials, yet now I have lessening choice but to oppose the transition due to Zia breaking the self imposed laws of the Gods.   Strange is it to me that until such a war does turn hot, I must do all I can to oppose an arms race I once assisted in progressing. Yet when the war begins and the laws change accordingly I will likely have to enter into an position akin to an arbiter to ensure some form of 'fair' conflict. In an odd realisation, it would not be as different to the role almost required of me if Prótos and Olsiri do enter into a mortal conflict.   Perhaps if I were still mortal myself, I'd find it as some form of punishment in the aggressive mindset I'd possess, yet if I'm correct now all I feel is the great opportunity for a true challenge. Conflict grows increasingly boring, as the amount of mortal beings above me grows smaller openly vaunting to them grows staler, and reaching new heights is still enjoyable but now fully expected. Now I begin to see how Demos could grow passive until he was given a task to dedicate himself to.   Yet I shouldn't take all of this space for simple grumblings. The request I place before you is simply to deliver the second letter to Zarligantir, as its contents are not vital enough to require immediate contact but are important enough to need to reach him quicker than I can manage myself. I shall thank you whether you choose to deliver it or not, as I understand it may be a far lesser request than you are used to receiving from myself or others.

Your letter arrived safely; I presume that unless you were attempting to use this chest to flee your current challenges, or to receive external assistance with them, Katas will not interfere with simple correspondence.   The plates have returned home; a structure such as that should always be whole.   That Zia oversteps is not surprising; the very existence of the word "zeal" traces its roots back to her. But to remove the free will of an aasimar is an offensive act, one that she would only undertake if she believed absolutely necessary. In seeking this transition, Zia reveals a fear that using true angels would escalate matters more quickly than she is prepared for.   Your assistance may not have been intended to lead to this; it is possible she defies even Olsír, though this is no more than speculation.   The Gods actively breach celestial decorum in preparation; it confirms that in whatever upheaval is coming, they believe we are either not sufficient for their plans, or that we will actively ignore or hinder them.   I would suggest speaking with the Xanómenes family of your situation; the last time a champion "ascended", they lost one of the brightest young minds I had met in many years. I can only imagine they would be more than eager to assist in whatever plans you have to "lax" Zia's hold.   The dulling of one's purpose is insidious; it is something that all sufficiently powerful individuals face at some point in their life. In our current age, it is my firm belief that more mages have relinquished their true potential than sought too far beyond it and fallen. I would be disappointed to learn of you joining the former group; continue pushing yourself, and the mundanity will pass in time.   Your request is simple; Zarligantír will read the letter immediately if I am the one to deliver it, though a written response, if required, may be slow.   I wish you luck with finding the Godforge,   Vhul'xo

Sent following Odessa messaging The Lich King after the disastrous attack against an island of monsters, where many mages were injured and items of great importance were lost.
We have considered your request; Zarligantír and I both agree that to attempt to force The Assembly into a meeting under threat would likely cause a rebellion across The Republic, regardless of their loyalties.   I assume this was miscommunication; a rebellion would be put down, as they have been in the past, but it would waste our time and weaken Ósa as a whole. This, I presume, is the opposite of your goal.   Some options remain; for example, should you desire to meet with a much smaller group of the most notable individuals, Zarligantír has offered to send your optional invitations via his publishing business. I remain open to discussing other requests.   Awaiting your response, Vhul'xo

Perhaps it was simply stress of the situation but I do agree that further weakness is the grand opposite of my desire. Yet you no doubt agree that something must be done, it cannot be had for Osa to split further under the cracks of a mage-priest war as well as a notable and/or powerful traitor.   The Consuls that were with us during our attack have agreed to the suggestion of convening a meeting with the others we know can be trust, but perhaps it would be better to gather them all whether 'we' can trust them or not? If an entire region's paired elected leaders are not invited that would spell a poor sign for unity and if they are invited then plenty of us could ensure loyalty via spells, if any were to object at such a time it would be seen as suspicious.   Discussing the notion of Zarligantir sending invitations out via the publishing business, how would that be done? Would it be a matter of inviting all of a certain skill or rank to attend a rare congregation or would they be more directed to specific mages of notable power and position?   Perhaps understandably for me, I do have another suggestion to work with or without Zarligantir's offer: What do you think of an Immortal taking time to join the meeting? I understand most of you would object to not having the time or that it may be improper due to deliberate absence to not impose yourselves upon us beyond more than necessary, but it cannot be denied it could help matters.   A third option I can think of is to focus less on the notion of the traitor for now, as it stands there's very little to know who it is right now anyway, and instead focus on an event to heal the cracks in Osa. Some form of event to unify mages and priests closer together into ever further apart.   One last question I have, knowing I'd never gain a clear answer, is thus: Knowing what we do of Fearghal and his collective, knowing of the lengths they've gone to before, and removing any and all pride and ego we innately have as mages: Can you confirm that the final piece of the destroyer is safe?   Thank you for your time during this and please thank Zarligantir for his also,   Odessa ton Asterion.

You are correct; the current state of our Republic is untenable if it is to remain in its current form.   Your enemies are intelligent; I believe the Lords of Ash and Dust are behind many of the threats facing Ósa, and the world, in recent days. They long ago learned how to hide from detection; if they have shared this gift with spies and traitors, your spells may not be enough to test their loyalties. Regardless, the idea to gather all the consuls has sound reasoning.   Zarligantír's offer is thus; list individuals you would wish to attend, whether by name, reputation, or title, and he will ensure they receive an invite. It then becomes their choice to ignore or accept.   You are aware of our misgivings; we prefer not to intervene directly. If you do find a traitor, and believe a connection the the Lords, one of us will arrive once we have been notified.   An event sounds pleasant; the leaders of Olsíri and Katarn would be best placed to organise such a thing.   The piece is safe from assault; no power but Zarligantír's flames could force open its lock. It is not safe from treachery; both the Consuls and Archmages of the Octagon all have access.   You are most welcome,   Vhul'xo

I would like to begin by thanking you for your quiet arrival last time you did, better as to not scare everybody who had already been afraid for quite some time recently before then. I do also hope the conversation with 601 was enjoyable, they have been ever eager to learn more about the magical nature of the world and the Republic in current times.   If it has been a topic for discussion within your class, I would kindly ask for the opinions on Sylas' position as general of the First Battalion? I, personally, have no doubt he will do well if even after some few troubles to start with. However I have no doubt that for some it will be questioned when learned of, he is both a Tiefling and a near complete outsider to the political world after all.   In truth, the true reason for this letter was to ask a simple question: Do you believe Yuan-ti are innately chaotic and evil or is it a by-product of their treatment by the Republic as a whole? Personally I hope it is the latter, not only because I wish for the world to not be so black and white but also because one of Fearghal's most trusted members is a Yuan-ti. She has a loyalty to her allies and a willingness to work with myself and my allies when necessary, despite her intense and understandable hatred of the Mage class.   There is also the topic of Yalal, the Yuan-ti who has resided within my settlement through its worst times and has been a great help during those times. Despite my beliefs he was sent by Rakshasa intended to sow chaos, no such event has happened so far. He has protected the settlement against the aquatic hordes of the Kraken, and when the settlement was at its weakest he did not strike. Olsir would have him gone, and as such I have little choice but to have him leave, yet just as I suspect some form of issue to occur in his remaining days here I also cannot fathom why it would occur now.   He commented on our lack of a sustaining river when he first arrived, and I suspect if he was intended as an agent of chaos he would have targeted that first and foremost. Perhaps when he realised he was welcomed so easily, and that his sabotage would be pointless during the oceanic siege from the Kraken, he chose to see how far his sanctuary could go?   Either way, included is a letter for Zarligantir, until such a time that I can easily contact him personally I have to humbly ask you to deliver it on my behalf.   Thank you for your time, assistance, and visit, Odessa ton Asterion, Speaker for the Stars.

Our conversation was enjoyable and fruitful; as an student of history there is much I can learn from The First Battalion, and as a student of magic there is much Unit 601 can learn from us. As a result we have arranged to have further discussions when they are next in Olsíri.   Sylas' status may prove beneficial; he has shown himself to be eager to aid The Republic despite being an outsider, and will hopefully be more resistant to political machinations than other candidates. I have faith in your nomination, and he has Aesk's approval for your group's assistance in Chyreum. Osera has spoken of sponsorship; this would both protect him from the scrutiny of mages, and serve as the blade over his head to dissuade any lapses of judgement. If she reaches a decision, I will inform you before the offer is made.   My experiences are biased; every Yuan-ti I have personally encountered has worshipped deities of chaos and madness, serving - whether knowingly or not - the goals of Rakshasan schemers. It is my belief that even should The Republic attempt to appese their culture and their leaders, they would wage their war until all other mortals are dead or enslaved. There are exceptions to every rule, however, and these individuals you have met may indeed be capable of feeling something other than hatred and blind fanaticism. Fearghal's companion may have a quirk unique to her experiences, or she may be able to provide important insight into others of her kind.   Yalal's goals may not have been destruction; consider if instead he has served as an informant? Typically Yuan-ti send purebloods in disguise for this purpose, but your ability to see through illusions negates that tactic entirely. You are also known to speak with honesty and candor, and therefore would be more likely to trust a creature monstrous in appearance and history that did not hide itself over any form of creature that did. Even if spying was his original purpose, I would advise great caution now that his days in your settlement are running short.   Your letter will be delivered; I am sure he will be amused by my being used as a messenger a second time, which may aid in you receiving a more swift reply.   Until we speak again, Vhul'xo

Delivered to Odessa following The Night of Terror that afflicted the world on the 4th of Suras 675 MA.
Odessa,   Recent events were unprecedented; you were right to reach out so quickly.   That the Lords of Ash were capable of an act on this scale is surprising; they were likely aided by Kýeri and his daughters. If these nightmares continue, The Dream Tyrant will require pacification through appeasement, or intimidation.   Prophecies of our departure are, as discussed, true; we will be travelling beyond mortal ken for some time, though are not planning to leave until late Summer. If an attack is indeed scheduled for such a time, our enemies have played their hand, and granted you time to prepare.   We are readying much ourselves; for urgent matters which deserve our attention in the coming months, you may use these sending stones to contact our agents and enforcers:   For matters relating to dragons, hybrids, or monsters, use the stone of scales; Dragon Hunter Mel'zrai'nox is a powerful and intelligent ally, well skilled in studying and countering his opponents. He is eager to assist if Virda'ak reveals himself again.   For matters that require judgement, interrogation, or punishment, use the stone of ichor; Dread Lord Orias is an almost unparalleled combatant and tracker, able to ensure that none can escape his law. He may contact you himself, if Osera decides to sponsor Sylas before we leave.   For matters of communication, strategy, or diplomacy, use the stone of skulls; Lady Amétri is a friend able to split her mind and body into many fragments, and thereby tackle many tasks at once.   For most other matters, use the egg-shaped stone; Inheritor Proteus is Aesk's youngest enforcer, eager to prove themselves. Even so, I suggest you respect their time as you would any of Ours.   The stone of stars is for emergencies only; High Lord Protagoras acts with our full authority in our absence, but has vital duties that cannot be managed by another.   Until we speak again, Vhul'xo
I should begin with this preface that this will likely be our last communication before your departure and eventual return, I would rather not distract you in such a time especially as you asked to not be, however I feel this final letter would be beneficial for mutual understanding of the 'war effort'.   We recently returned from meeting with the Planeswalker, as unlike I expected as she was, but it proved a productive encounter. Not only did we discover the nature of her planar device but we had her agree to have Zia's artefact find its way to Zykida, a much needed moral boost for the Aasimar I suspect. She also informed us that she is unlikely to oppose Fearghal if he was to attempt to use her device to aid in potentially world altering plans and plots which is not at all helpful but also not unexpected.   I've recently reread our older correspondence and think it perhaps time an old plot come into action. As much as the Gods may dislike it by way of reliance upon Fearghal, his actions and behaviours have me believe he is in no way intentionally aligned with the Archons' pets. If he can be convinced of the threat of the Rakshasa he may be equally convinced to slow his approach to his own goal in way of combating our hidden foes, especially as I would hope him against their latest nightmare laden scheme.   Upon the topic of these nightmares, Kyeri himself is known to be involved in this matter directly. Whilst an agreement with him by us was struck in months past there was no pact signed, aggression against him is entirely still within our potential. In his current actions he has marked himself as a threat and that threat must be dealt with. How would you advise that be done? We alone are not enough, perhaps with Zia's champion and her friends we would hold a chance, yet my thought is to enlist a stone giant we know of who already was once prey to Kyeri's daughters.   I know Katarn has handled itself during these nightmarish days quite well, as has my settlement. Pylona has faired suitably yet I would ask, do you know of any cities or major villages beyond Olsiri that have not done that we could somehow aid in the short term?   For other matters, I entrusted the Stones of Scales, Ichor, and the egg to General Sylas as I considered them better in his hands than mine. As a non-political militant figure now, the Dragon Hunter would be better contacted if Sylas deems a threat worth his time more than my never contacting him, the Dread Lord may soon be his superior and I would not have Sylas seen without that stone if they were to meet early, and as I am often loath of ask for aid beyond simple advice most times the Inheritor's contact stone is best in Sylas' hands both for Sylas' own authority and for more collectively important matters of discussion with the Enforcer. I have held personally on to Lady Ametri's stone, as you are my sponsor, as well as the High Lord's stone as I suspect contact with him is best done by the closest to his rank amongst us. A final ask related to this, however, is in what matters I bring to discuss with Lady Ametri. Would she be as willing as you are for correspondence such as this or should she be contacted in only official context?   Finally, amongst this list, I am beginning to think of seeking a Senator position within Teraka. Politically it would be wise and I doubt myself in much challenge for one of the seats due to the many issues solved by myself and my allies. I ask instead if you think it wise to do so with the understanding of my extended duties currently whilst combating Fearghal, the Rakshasa, preparing for both a mortal and God war, and what else is likely to occur whether I wish it or not.   With added consideration of your time and great thanks, Odessa ton Asterion, Speaker for the Stars.
Odessa, Your preface is appreciated; it is always pleasant to see individuals being respectful of our time.   I am glad Sídra was feeling productive; she has been involved in her work for many years now, and often declines to speak with others. Her refusal to oppose The Green Knight is unfortunate but not surprising; she has saved this world too many times to count, and refuses to do so again.   Turning two of our opponents against each other is wise; from what I have studied of him, Fearghal may in fact have the perfect combination of abilities to counter most Rakshasa, so long as someone could ensure they do not have a chance to beguile him.   A lesser god of Kýeri's power cannot be truly killed; you may achieve victory in battle and weaken his grip for several years, however. Do not attempt to battle Kýeri in The Dreaming; in his home realm he holds near limitless power. If you were to pull him into our world instead, Dragon Hunter Mel'zrai'nox may be all the assistance you require for dealing with this foe. Your stone giant ally may be a way to achieve this.   There are many suffering these nightmares; Olsíri itself was close to violence until Zarligantír arrived to set minds at ease. Palnos and Pelíos both are in the grip of terror, and several settlements in Kanios have reported their first deaths due to lack of sleep, violence, or suicide. While your aid may be appreciated in many places, I believe you would be most suited to ending these nightmares at the source.   Lady Amétri is willing to correspond; she is often pulled in many directions, however, so be prepared to wait greater times for a response.   An official position would benefit you; even if you cannot attend often, to have a voice on matters that affect you or yours is wise. High Lord Protagoras claimed a Consul seat for similar reasons, despite being even busier than your group.   Wishing you luck with your many challenges, Vhul'xo
