Ámmos - The Witness Character in Éda | World Anvil

Ámmos - The Witness

The sands of time flow for all things in the universe, but this was not always the case. In the early days of creation there was no change, no movement, no aging or growth. The gods slept and awoke, and that was all the existence knew. But when Agítio first attempted to move the world, Ámmos was born. Ámmos allowed Agítio’s power to truly take hold of the universe by granting the final dimension they needed to move through.   Since that first animation, Ámmos has concerned himself only with keeping track of all that is, was, and will be, and allowing it to pass. Such a narrow viewpoint does not lend well to worshipers, but The Witness seems to care little for praise, content to serve his purpose and serve it well. Those few who do worship are often oracles and philosophers attempting to discern the true nature of time, and figuring out if fate truly is immutable.   Many heroes in times of myth have visited a temple to Ámmos to have their fortune told, and in every single tale these fortunes come true, strongly implying Ámmos’ power is absolute, and not even the grandest hero may avoid their destiny. It is said that only the gods may alter fate in the slightest, and Ámmos’ most devout worshipers dedicate themselves to repairing the golden thread wherever they find a flaw.

Divine Portfolio

Ámmos' main portfolio is absolutely vital but fairly simple; he rules over Time and Destiny, allowing for and watching Creation unfolding (and giving it a nudge when necessary.) Interestingly, the other major domain he has some power over is that of Luck; it is believed by some that there is no randomness in the universe, and that what is attributed to chance or luck is actually Ámmos' guiding hand.

Divine Relationships & Shared Portfolios

Four Lords of Balance

Agítio, Ámmos, Fidain, and Haroch are the four fundamental forces that allow a living, active Cosmos to exist. The other gods all have a hand in Creation, in making all the wondrous miracles in the world. But without Motion and Time these miracles would be but a static painting none but the Gods could experience, and without Decay and Death there would be no more space made on the Universal Canvas, no ability for things to grow and new life to be made, and no meaning in the act of doing so.

The Fates

Ámmos is known to be the God of Time and Destiny, but it is said by many that he merely watches the weaving of the Golden Thread, and that it is instead his underworld daughters, The Fates, who actually control all Fates.

Tetrad of Knowledge

Suróza, Olsír, Lútus, and Ámmos all claim Knowledge as part of their domains. Each represents different aspects of this most vital of realms; Suróza holds sway over languages and the uncovering of lost or hidden knowledge, while Olsír is the Goddess of general knowledge, both magical and mundane. Ámmos rules over history and grants glimpses of the future, while Lútus is lord of invention - the act of expanding knowledge rather than hoarding or rediscovering it.

Piety

You gain piety to Ámmos when protecting and following the strands of fate they lay out for you
  • Defeating a creature that has stepped out of its place, most often a worshipper of another god attempting to cheat fate
  • Repairing a significant wound dealt to destiny by the gods' ambitions
  • Aiding another in the pursuit of their destiny
You lose piety to Ámmos when interfering with the natural flow or threatening the strength of the golden thread
  • Undoing a deserved punishment or curse suffered by another creature
  • Assisting a creature in undermining the natural order or exploiting destiny
  • Withholding information of the future granted by Ámmos through visions
Ámmos's Devotee - 3 piety As a devotee of Ámmos, you can manipulate the bonds of destiny that invisibly entangle every living thing. You can cast command with this trait a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once) per long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting modifier for this spell.   Ámmos's Votary - 10 piety You can cast clairvoyance with this trait once per long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting modifier for this spell.   Ámmos's Disciple - 25 piety You develop a second sense, allowing you to intuit the tug and pull of destiny. You can't be surprised, provided you aren't incapacitated.   Champion of the Sands - 50 piety You can increase your Strength or Wisdom score by 2 and also increase your maximum for that score by 2.
