Guardians of the Howling Gyre
Aarakocra originate from the Howling Gyre, an endless storm of fierce winds and rain that surrounds the serene realm of Aaqa in the Elemental Plane of Air. These birdlike humanoids patrol the skies around Aaqa, acting as protectors against invaders from the Elemental Plane of Earth. Among their sworn enemies are gargoyles, with whom they have a long-standing animosity.
Enemies of Elemental Evil
As agents of the Wind Dukes of Aaqa, the aarakocra scout various planes to uncover and monitor temples of Elemental Evil. Their missions often involve spying on hostile elemental creatures and either taking direct action against them or reporting back to the Wind Dukes for reinforcements.
Aeries on the Material Plane
On the Material Plane, aarakocra establish nests, or aeries, atop the highest mountain peaks, particularly those near portals to the Elemental Plane of Air. From these vantage points, they remain vigilant for signs of elemental activity and potential threats to their home. Though they prefer a life of freedom and constant movement, they are willing to guard a single region for years if necessary to protect it from the influence of Elemental Evil.
Unique Perspective
Aarakocra lack the concept of political borders or personal property. Material wealth, such as gold and gems, holds little value to them. They believe resources should be used only as needed, with any excess released to the winds for others to find.
The Quest for the Seven Shards
The Wind Dukes of Aaqa, members of the vaati race, once ruled many worlds before a conflict with the Queen of Chaos. This war culminated in the creation of the Rod of Law, a powerful artifact forged by seven vaati heroes. During a climactic battle, the rod was used to kill the Queen’s general, Mishka the Wolf Spider, but it shattered into seven pieces, scattering across the multiverse. Aarakocra search for signs of these shards, hoping to reassemble the artifact, now known as the Rod of Seven Parts, to restore its power.
Abilities and Traits
Flight: Aarakocra possess wings that allow them to soar through the skies.
Talons: Their sharp claws can serve as natural weapons.
Sharp Senses: Their keen eyesight aids in both hunting and surveillance.
Cultural Traits
Aarakocra value freedom and movement above all else. Their lives are deeply connected to the winds and the sky, and they revere the Wind Dukes as both leaders and symbols of their enduring mission. Their simple and practical approach to life, combined with their dedication to protecting their homeland and its allies, makes them a unique presence in any world they inhabit.
