The Lair of the Beast and the Mansion of the Rake
Layer: 487
Ruler: Kanchelsis
While some vampires embrace their undead curse and revel in eternal life, others despise their nature and strive to regain their mortality. Kanchelsis, the ruler of the 487th layer of the Abyss, desired something beyond these extremes. He sought not only immortality but the power and stature of a god.
The Mansion of Kanchelsis
Kanchelsis's domain is a sprawling, shape-shifting mansion. It features ornately decorated hallways of mirrors, galleries adorned with countless portraits, aviaries filled with unsettling cries, and gardens that exude a chilling presence. The mansion is deeply connected to Kanchelsis's will, changing its layout and features at his whim. He takes pleasure in unleashing uninvited guests into this labyrinth, using its shifting walls, sudden floor drops, and collapsing staircases to torment them.
Servants of Kanchelsis
The vampire demigod is served by three ferocious blood fiends: Memnul, Dagrobard, and Vonce. These entities are so uncontrollable in their fury that Kanchelsis often keeps them restrained. Despite their destructive tendencies, Kanchelsis himself struggles to control the divine essence coursing through him. His polished demeanor can be shattered by fits of primal rage, which he refers to as "the Beast" taking over. During these episodes, his refined nature vanishes, replaced by unrelenting brutality. Encounters with him in this state often resemble a terrifying chase, as victims flee through his ever-shifting mansion in desperation.
The Union of Eclipses
Kanchelsis is the founder of a widespread vampiric organization known as the Union of Eclipses. Members work to amass wealth and influence on their home worlds and gather three times a year at Kanchelsis's mansion. These convocations, attended by numerous elder vampires, serve to discuss the order's affairs and pay homage to their leader. Killing any member of the Union is considered an offense against all, with the collective retribution of these immortal beings ensuring long-lasting consequences.
