Western Union

Apart from the station’s ticket office, waiting rooms, and lobby, there is a Western Union Office providing a telegram service. For a fraction of the cost of a long-distance telephone call, Western Union can transmit and deliver a telegram to almost anywhere on the planet in a matter of hours. The cost of a telegram is roughly 2 cents per word.

Incoming telegrams are delivered by messengers (youths on bicycles), the best of whom is 14-year-old Bobby Ashbourne, who knows every shortcut and every dead-end in town.
