127 ARKHAM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
520 Gedney Street
The Chamber of Commerce dedicates itself to the protection and growth of Arkham’s business, trade, and finance. They dispense assistance and advice to local business members, but one of the key benefits is the networking opportunities presented by the regular business breakfast, lunch, and evening events put on to promote trade and foster professional relationships. Every so often, guest speakers (from the community or from farther afield) come to give talks and share the benefit of their experience. The organization also seeks to attract new businesses to Arkham. Membership costs $50 a year, and applicants must be Arkham property owners.
Currently, the Chamber’s governing board is split on whether Arkham should focus on growth by bringing in new industry or if it should be content to keep the status quo and remain a center of academic excellence through the university. A number of older members fear that new corporations and industry will change the face of Arkham, with “too much modernity” (a.k.a. immigrants) being a bad thing for the social fabric of the town.
Benefits & Responsibilities of Membership
Membership increases Credit Rating by +1D10 (one time only), and additionally grants a bonus die to a social skill roll when dealing with other business owners—this may translate to a better rate for such things like legal representation or advice, banking, and so on. Note that members should make a Luck roll once per year, which if failed means they have been nominated or chosen to serve on a charity or special project committee, taking up at least 1D6 hours per week for 1D6 months.
Election to the Chamber’s governing board requires a minimum Credit Rating of 50% and a commitment of three hours to the board each week. After three months of successful service, board membership increases Credit Rating by +1D6+6 (one time only) but serving on a charity or special project committee is no longer optional and becomes required, consuming +1D6+1 hours week.
Failure to serve in a charity or project position can have negative consequences in terms of a person’s good standing in the business community which, at the Keeper’s discretion, could lead to an automatic decrease in Credit Rating by –1D10+6 points or a penalty die imposed on social skill interactions with the business community.
