106 MANLEY THEATER

670 Gedney Street

While the Manley Theater has begun to show moving picture features and still runs some vaudeville comedies, it prides itself on being a legitimate stage. The Arkham Amateur Theatre Company (ARKHAM AMATEUR THEATRE COMPANY) pays a major portion of the rent (the season begins with rehearsals in February and lasts through August), as do the University Players (page 163), who schedule performances throughout the school year.

The theater has a box office, front of house reception area (formerly with a wet, now dry, bar), cloakrooms, and a proscenium stage, with an audience capacity of 400. Mrs. Nelly Samson is the owner-manager and employs a crew of 12 (full- and part-time) staff to cover front of house and backstage, increasing this number temporarily during larger roductions as necessary—liberal arts students can often be found temping here.

Notable Folk
