Various Battle Tactics

  • Oblique Order: This is a tactic often used by the Palii and the city states of the East Hu-Balai region and the North Yamuhi Steppe who have mostly slow moving armies with rigid formations. You concentrate the majority of your forces in one location while spreading the rest of your forces to hold off the rest of your opponent's forces. As your main force pushes through, the rest of your forces slowly pull back. It only works if you and your opponent's armies are slowly moving and rigid.
  • Feigned Retreat: This is a tactic that developed in many regions independantly and is easy to comprehend. It is a favorite of cavalry based armies. They charge an enemy and then start to flee staying just out of reach and they lure their pursuers into an ambush where they are massacred.
  • Wolfpack Tactic: This is a tactic developed by the Guntartars. They separate into many small bands of about 5-11 warriors that constantly rotate around their enemy from approximately 200-300 meters away and each time a different band charges in, shoots some arrows and dashes away. While one band pulls back, there is also another one charging at the same time from a different direction. If there are enough warriors, you can have a lot of bands constantly attacking at the same time from differnt fronts.
  • Back Facing Shot: While being chased, Guntartar riders have been known to turn around in their saddles (essentialy sitting backwards) and shoot back at the enemy. (the real world Parthian shot)
  • Rhomboid Cavalry Formation: This is a tactic invented by the Aurukshukan. The horsemen organize in a rhombus shape with a veteran or senior cavalry commander at each corner. This formation is excellent for charging into gaps in enemy formations and it has no problem changing direction while maintaining complete cohesion.
  • Cavalry Wedge: This is a formation invented by the Fren-Chitali peoples as well as a few others at different places at different times. The horsemen arrange in triangle with a veteran commander at the front. They charge an enemy line and smash into a gap, widening it as the wedge makes it's way through. Excellent for exploiting gaps but bad at maintaining cohesiveness while changing direction.
  • Wolf-hunt Engagement: This tactic is used by predatory many species that hunt in groups. It's a rather simple tactic really, you have a team that drives the target forward and a second group thatattacks it from the flank (this is the most simplistic explanation). If the target is a group though, the first team drives a single individual out of the rest of the group and and towards the second team that will catch and kill it.
  • Reverse Wolf-hunt Engagement: This is a tactic that the centaur Anda was very famous for using when fighting against people. It works in the following fashion: The force is divided into 3 groups. The first group charges at the enemy head on and draws it with feigned retreat. The second group slips in behind the target and charges at the target's rear once in position. While charging, the second group signals to the first and third groups to charge. The 3 groups make physical contact with the target at the same time with the first group engaging the front, the second group engaging the rear and the third group engaging the flank. The resulting encirclement can utterly destroy the target, but if one or both of the wings haven't engaged yet and have a decent force, they can break the encirclement. this tactic wasn't exclusive to Anda, it was also used by lots of people.
