Centaur
The centaur is a curious creature that lives in open and remote regions like the Northern desert. It's a powerhouse of a beast with 2 hearts, 2 pairs of lungs, 4 kidneys, any organ that is found in the torso it has in double because it has two torsos. The centaur is a fast hunter that eats anything it can catch, all the while there is nothing that can't outrun it except for an Erep with a very good head start. Even though it's slightly smarter than a chimpanzee, it's smart enough to use spears and javelins as well as make them. You don't want to meet a hungry wild centaur, but you could perhaps get a tame one to agree to use it similarly to warhorse. You could also raise a centaur and condition it from infancy to your own personal gains. They are unlikely to rebel like a human slave might because they are simply too stupid.
When it comes to their sapience, they can recognize themselves in a mirror and have a basic understanding of what "I" means, but not much else.
Basic Information
Anatomy
It has two torsos complete with all their organs. There is a single digestive tract where the first large intestine connects to the second stomach. This means that a centaur can eat basically anything it wants because it goes through a complete digestive process twice. The head is slightly longer than a human head to house extra teeth in the jaws and the nostrils are larger than those of a horse to increase the air intake to the lungs. Overall, the head looks very apelike. The brain is slightly larger than a human brain, but it's structured differently with large areas utilized for motor, visual, audio and other sensory functions. Thus, it's an intelligent creature that is partially self sentient, but is outclassed by far by the fully sentient and highly intelligent Midgets, humans and manderthals and even more so by the gate-dragons. The centaur's six limbs are all very strong and well suited for their jobs and purposes. The centaur's cardiovascular system allows it to outrun anything and survive even with a non-functional heart and two disabled lungs. Centaurs can outrun anything because they can outlast them and because of their speed. A young and healthy centaur can easily shrug off running 150 kilometers in a single day.
Biological Traits
The centaur has a large muscular body with long sleek legs and it lives for decades. it has the potential to live for 120 but it rarely lives that long as centaur herds tend to fight with each other. These furry six limbed quadropedal creatures with apelike heads are not easily tracked as they only leave hoof prints-behind which makes them look like horses.
Genetics and Reproduction
Female centaurs always give birth to twins. Never more, never less. They are born after a gestation period of 12 months, and they are capable of walking just an hour after birth and run after just two. Nothing is known about their mating rituals.
Growth Rate & Stages
Centaurs mature quickly and live long. They start eating solid food at about six months old and their mothers wean them after just a year. They reach full size, strength and speed at the age of 4 and reach sexual maturity at about 3 and a half years old.
Ecology and Habitats
Centaurs prefer to live in wide open areas. They are found in tundras, grasslands, deserts and steppes. Most of them are found in the northern desert and in the northern tundra, however, there are some Guntartar songs which speak of there being centaurs in the steppe. Centaurs are usually in a predator/scavenger/herbivore position in the food chain. They are hunted by some creatures like wolves, humans, dragons and the occasional manderthal.
Dietary Needs and Habits
They hardy creatures that eat almost everything. They forage for food in teams where some of the team watches for danger while the rest forages for food. They eat lots of various plants from leaves and grass to fruit. When hunting, they stalk and chase down their prey to the point of exhaustion at which point they hit it on the head with a club or stab it with a spear.
Centaurs have been known to practice cannibalism.
Additional Information
Social Structure
They live in small herds with a dominant male or female known as a patriarch or matriarch respectively. The dominant individual is usually also the oldest individual with the most experience and knows where the water holes are etc. There is also a certain hierarchy in the group and certain individuals tend to have certain jobs. Centaurs usually don't live to their longevity potential as herds have a tendency to fight with each other.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Centaur fur is also very valuable, but it's not very wanted because a centaur as a fighting machine is far more useful. There have also been cases of people arming centaurs they raised from infancy and used them as guards who doubled as "attack dogs".
Facial characteristics
Large ape-lke head with huge nostrils.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
In the ice age, they were found all along the open northern regions all the way to the tundras. During the last warm spell before the end of the ice age, some of the southern populations were separated from the northern ones by forests filled with neanderthals and thus spread south to more southern plains and deserts. During the last ice age they even spread farther reaching the continent of Rashini and got as far as the upper Berinus. However, human migration and advancement caused the centaurs to become rarer and the end of the last ice age caused vast populations to go extinct where forests, deserts and seas replaced open plains that looked like the North Yamuhi Steppe. At around the 23rd century B.B they only existed in the tundras of the north, the northern desert, the North Yamuhi Steppe and the area between the Berinus basin and the Saniri Mountains among a spot few remote places and became very rare. During the Fren-Chitali migrations that started in 4,300 B.B, the Rashinian populations went extinct except for a few herds that lived in the Saniri Mountains. By 0 A.B the centaur was rare and only known to exist in the Northern tundra and the Northern Desert. However, There are a few secret populations in the North Yamuhi Steppe that made an active effort to stay secret.
Average Intelligence
High. Semi self-sentient.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Centaurs have a decent sense of smell as well as very keen eyesight and hearing.
Civilization and Culture
Average Technological Level
Very primitive. They know how to use basic tools to make sharpened wood spears and javelins. Some centaur herds learned how to make bone tipped spears. They know that if you kill or rob an armed midget, human or manderthal you can get good spears and javelins with sharp, hard and shiny heads.
Photo Description: A long tailed centaur holding an atlatle and a pair of iron tipped javelines stolen from humans (the rust from lack of maintenance is apparent). The shillelagh type club the centaur is holding is often made by centaurs as the wood at the knot is less likely to break and has a mild penetrative effect (imagine yourself as an antelope getting chased by a centaur armed with this club. Bye bye skull).
Photo Description: A short tailed centaur holding a club and a spear tipped with a sharpened horn that were both centaur-made. Both species of centaur are found in the Northern Desert.
