The most important profession for a well functioning society

In the X region of Tiel, few things are valued more than learning. It is seen as the cornerstone of a good meritocracy; without a good education, there is no hope that everyone can do their best. Those who can not only excel at an area of learning but can also teach it are valued very highly in the society.

Career

Qualifications

To become a teacher, one must have first excelled at their studies in at least one area of knowledge. This area of knowledge can be practical or only able to be learned in books. Whether mining or history, one must have outstanding knowledge in their area before they can even begin to learn how to be a teacher.
The education for being a teacher is tough, or at least that's what the many people who fail through their courses say. The truth is that the educational courses are some of the best, but their requirements to qualify are the highest of any other profession.
People who failed but completed at least half the teacher education often become private tutors.

Perception

Social Status

Teachers are usually held in high regard by the community. Everyone knows how complicated it is to become one, and most everyone agrees with the importance of a good education and good teachers. This view in society means that teachers have a good chance of becoming leaders of their communities if they choose to.

Demographics

Whether a stereotype or not, gnomes are considered some of the best teachers (and tutors) in X. Their absolute drive to learn everything, there is to know about a subject and put it to practice means that their expertise is often unrivalled. Their long lifespans also mean that throughout their lives, gnomes may become knowledgeable in several different areas of knowledge.
