When inside their nest, Soldiers will attempt to swarm opponents.
The nest of the Northern Giant Leaf Cutter Ant is a series of chambers connected by tunnels. At a minimum. it contains the Queen's Chamber. Egg Chamber, 1d6 Food Chambers, and a Waste Chamber. There are generally 3 entry points to the nest.
Tunnels are narrow (3'-5' wide) and short (4'-6' tall) with rough, uneven walls. Chambers range from as small as 10'x20' for a Food Chamber to 30'x60' or larger for the Queen's chamber, and generally have higher ceilings than the tunnels. Walls throughout are rough, uneven, and coated with a hardened secretion from the workers that reinforces structural integrity.
The Northern Giant Leaf Cutter Ant can be found in temperate forests. A nest generally includes a Queen, Soldiers (1d20 +5), and Workers (4x the number of Soldiers). A nest will also include an egg chamber, usually off of the Queen's main chamber.
The Queen controls her workers and soldiers using pheromone secretions and audible clicks. Northern Giant Leaf Cutter Ants can detect movement and can see light and shadow in the area immediately around them, but they rely more on senses and information they get from their legs and antennae than their eyes.
Queens and Soldiers are medium sized creatures about 5' in length, while Workers are small creatures about 2' in length. At any given time, 60% of the Workers are out of the nest gathering food and water while the remainder tend to the nest. Depending on the environment surrounding the nest, 10% to 25% of Soldiers will be out of the nest protecting foraging workers, while the remainder guard the nest. Entrances to the nest will each have (1d4) guards and the rest will be dispersed within the nest.
Worker ants will generally ignore intruders until they are attacked or interfered with in some way, at which point they will summon Soldiers to defend them using pheromones and audible clicks. The workers will then attempt to avoid the attacker until help arrives.
If the Queen is killed, Soldier ants will lose any coordination and attack the nearest target. Worker ants will retreat to the egg chamber and secrete chemicals that convert (1d6) eggs into future Queens. If all eggs are destroyed as well, the Workers become catatonic and eventually die.
