How to Create Dreams, Visions, and Flashbacks

Dreams, visions, and flashbacks are very important part of many worlds and stories—whether they are of supernatural origin or a look to a character's past. If you're wondering which article template to use on World Anvil to write about this, here are some recommendations.

  • Character flashbacks: If you want to write a character flashback narratively (like you would in a book), you can still have it in the Character article; but if you want it as a stand-alone article, the Myth template is likely the best fit. An alternative is using a timeline with historical events.
  • World flashbacks: Or, in other words, writing lore from a past perspective. Generally, that would be considered a Myth!
  • Prophetic visions: A prophetic vision is a story or event that might not be completely true (nobody knows because it hasn't happened yet!), so the Myth template would be very fitting. However, if the vision was written down somewhere and you want to focus on the in-world written version of the vision, you can use the Document template instead.
  • Dreams: Generally, a dream someone gets will be a Generic Article or a section in the Character article. If the dream is part of a ritual (such as a dream all seers get when they get their powers), it might be part of a Tradition or even Natural Law article.

If none of the specific templates quite fit what you have in mind, you can always use a Generic Article, or a Prose article if you're writing it in a narrative style. For more information and help with article templates, check how to use article templates.
