Personal history
Born in Luskan, the only tiefling child of human parents, Nethys had a rough childhood, teased by her siblings and her peers. Her mother seemed to be the only one who cared about her, teaching Nethys her own trade, the various skills that a thief and spy learn.
Nethys was forced to flee Luskan when a member of one of the local "Ships" tried to rob her, and she fought back without thinking. She ended up in Orlumbor and became involved with Rendam Seachewer's smuggling ring there, as no reputable business would have her.
She quickly moved from average smuggler to Rendam's right hand and office assistant. She had a knack with numbers that put her in a position to quite possibly be heir to the "throne".
But not everyone was pleased with her rise to prominence. Rendam's second-in-command, Gorsted Skullforce, successfully led a mutiny against him, attacking at night and slaughtering almost everyone who would have stood with him. Nethys saw her lover, Storm, a female water genasi, cut down before her eyes, and barely escaped with a handful of men, a dress, the brooch pinned to it, and a sword. Most of the remaining men scattered when they reached the mainland, but one dwarf, Balram, stayed with her, nursing her injuries.
Left destitute, Nethys and Balram decided to put their skills to work as adventurers, one job where Nethys' tiefling heritage didn't count against her very much. They worked together for many years before Balram fell in love and retired.
Nethys continues to adventure, looking for a place to belong, and dreaming of revenge against Gorsted Skullforce.
Education
Nethys went to grade school in Luskan, where she was teased and excluded by the other children. When she was older, she dropped out, and learned from her mother, Jolsi, who taught her daughter her own rogue skills.
