Mission at the Haunted Manor

by Jonathan Fontayne

Jonathan left his family to go to the city of Blackburn to pursue a new job, he had heard that they were offering lucrative work there for mercenaries, investigators and the like. He said goodbye to Marinia and took a carriage to a small town about a quarter of the way there. He stopped and slept in a small inn, where he traded stories with the bard who was performing there, a young half elf man named Zane. He journeyed on in the morning with a caravan, and he made it to the town within the week, quickly taking a job advertised by the town paper. He was told to go to the mayor's office, where he was sent in a carriage with his new partners for the job. There was a large orc named Rouga who he did not particularly care for, but he made for a more than competent swordsman. There was a quiet fairy named Elwyn who didn't say much unprompted which he enjoyed, and next to her was a loud old pirate with a peculiar accent named Pierre, who would speak his mind loudly at every given opportunity. There was also a dwarf bard named Hubble who was joking and trying to ease tension the entire carriage ride, a valiant yet fruitless endeavor. The two black sheep of the group were sitting together in a separate cart, a small goblin artificer named Boblin who seemed to live for chaos, and a possibly brain damaged gnome named Shnoblin.
When the group arrived at their destination, they got out at a large manor, and the mayor himself was waiting for them. He gave each member of the party a blue armband. They were told their job was to enter the manor and kill everything without an armband. This seemed like a standard pest control job, but it was more the crew itself that worried Jonathan. There was a man outside the manor that tried to sell the group his wares, and Jonathan had to actively stop Boblin and Shnoblin from robbing him. Once inside, they fought a few skeletons and came across a strange mirror that seemed to house an entire other universe. The group decided to break the mirror to see what was inside, a course of action that Jonathan did not agree with. Still, after the group tried in vain to destroy it, Jonathan half-heartedly fired an arrow at it from his crossbow, which to his surprise, actually pierced and destroyed the painting. They heard yelling and chaos from the painting, which left Jonathan stunned, and he swiftly moved on.
Pushing further into the manor, the group fought more monsters and was confronted by the Avatar of Death itself. The Avatar told them that chaos was ensuing in the manor, and he needed them to help him get rid of everything in the manor that wasn't supposed to be there. After little deliberation the group agreed, and they had to make camp in a small room. Another adventuring group found them, a mysterious group of powerful people, and they seemed to believe Tiamat was causing all that trouble. They soon parted ways, and it was business as usual. They soon entered a library where a Death Tyrant was lurking, and though Jonathan tried to reason with it, he accidentally angered it, which caused a huge fight with the fearsome foe. It was a dangerous battle, with Rouga almost died after taking a death beam to the face, and Shnoblin being petrified to stone by the gaze of the Death Tyrant, but Jonathan summoned his eldritch patron's tentacles and ripped the beast asunder. The "blind jokes" ceased after this, though they had to leave the statue that Shnoblin became behind in the room.
Eventually, they entered the last room. There was an elaborate coffin at the end of it with gold and treasure surrounding it. There were also elaborate statues of Knights lining the walls. Elwyn strolled over and picked up some gold, which caused the coffin to open and the statues to come to life. A figure rose out of the coffin, a skeleton in elaborate armor with a crown, and he claimed to be King. He told the group that he had no quarrel with them, and would not harm them in any way, except for Elwyn, who he declared he must kill for robbing him. He told the group he would permit them to leave, but Elwyn stays. The group looked to Jonathan for guidance, and Jonathan thought of his kids and his wife, and their unborn baby. He told the group that they should leave, as this foe was too much for them. He used a spell on Elwyn as he left to see through her eyes. To his surprise, Boblin declared he was staying. He said he was done being a coward, and he mustered up his courage and stayed behind. The rest of the group left with Jonathan, and he saw through Elwyn's eyes as the "King" congratulated Boblin on his courage and loyalty, before beheading Elwyn and allowing Boblin to leave unharmed. As the group left, Jonathan began to feel dizzy, before being catapulted through time to months prior.
