Session 1: The Dwarven Crafter's Cup

by Mari Rosuto

I arrived in the Dwarf Kingdom yesterday. The group of Luminaries who came with me included a Triton named Vodos Pumanath, a half orc named Wisteria, a human named Emrys, and a rather hefty Bugbear named Romilius with his posy of servants. Most notable among those servants is a blue dragonborn named Calidorus Similis. He seems to function as Romilius' chef although he seems to be just a little off. He make a quick remark on turning Vodos into a Triton soup which, given Vodos' pride, almost turned violent. Wisteria defused the situation by suggesting an arm wrestling competition but that chef is slightly worrisome. Vodos only slightly managed to win that contest.

Vodos, despite his pride, seems like someone I can get along with quite well. He seems to be a triton who is here for the experience and possibly profess the greatness of his deeds. He seems to have a plethora of stories attached to him. The one about wresting a Great White Shark was very entertaining. I wouldn't mind listing to more of his stories. Wisteria seems troubled with her past but I'll leave it at that. It's not good to pry into the lives of others. That and also being a half orc in the middle of the dwarf kingdom is a bit rough. Emrys is a bit quiet about himself and more concerned with the task at hand. He seems to be knowledgeable about the wide field of magic although Wisteria likely has similar knowledge. My interaction with Romilius was brief but he reminds me of the merchants among the beast folk. He certainly seems to love his money.

The tournament began earlier today. It was mostly a fun and enjoyable experience. The first round was in an arena to go, grab, and repair eight items from the mock battle field they set up. Wisteria, Calidorus, and Vodos rushed forward to grab things while me and Emrys repaired the items they brought. I've learned a new technique today from this. Slamming molten metal on the anvil into a rough shape with smaller hammer strikes can deliver weapons rather quickly. Overall, I made a sword from broken parts, two daggers, a shield, and some sort of polearm.

The next round consisted of fighting rust monsters. We went with the hardest difficulty and placed the silver poncho on Vodos. This round was really difficult. I couldn't use my halberd which I recently forged since these creatures apparently destroy anything metal. Luckily Wisteria lent me her quarterstaff. While in combat I thought I would have gotten swarmed but they went straight for Vodos. While I focused on attacking their flanks, Emrys cleaned up the arena with some well placed fireballs. Well, I mean well placed as in he destroyed all of the creatures. I did get caught up inside of both of his blasts. I honestly felt that I would have died from that. I don't blame him though. The mission was completed and we came out at 21 points, the highest we could have gotten. Wisteria's staff was defiantly in worse shape then me I think. Scorched and covered in blood, of both mine and the creatures, I actually feel a little bad about that. She waved her hands though and the staff looked perfectly fine. Magic really is something huh...

The third and final round consisted of making our own trophy cup. The dwarf spokesperson ended up breaking the trophy so it was really clear the final stage was improvised. Somehow, the cup we made became magical. I don't quite trust myself with it so Wisteria took it. It helps artisans create their own things but it does so immediately and instantly. To me, that's just no fun. Anyway, despite our placements in the previous rounds, we got second place. It probably the cake the chef made to go with the beer in the cup but I think that it's expected to lose against dwarves when it comes to crafting. They're natural experts after all. Besides, getting to meet the dwarven king in person was already an experience. Royalty is really, not too impressive. We can't be experts at everything.

Well, there's still some hours left in the day. I think I'll go sightseeing a bit. Apparently there's eight clans of dwarves here. I wonder what stories they have among them.
