Black Hunger From the Deep

by Indigo Diomedea

She is aching. The Ship.
Cold Breath of the Deep had her surrounded in the Dawntide Hours. We were moving sluggishly. Then, thunder and roaring.

A battle was fought nearby and we saw a Dwarven Ship take flight. They are built to sink, float if luck is with them, never to fly. It crashed and crumbled, still fighting. A Ship of the Line passed us by, human-built and sturdy, but blind in the Cold Breath, nearly ramming the Ship.

What followed was a Hunger of the Deep, a City Eater. But it had died long ago.

Something has stirred up the dead things of the deep and among them is this dread god-monster.

We have a name for this dark thing, as we fished humans out of the water and out of the sky. One of them fell, with a winged beast of great beauty - Eostra-Captain made me tend him instead of the Ship or the beast - and he calls this bitter song, this rising of the dead flesh of the sea the Black Tide.

The Repository of Memory would maybe have scripture on this. Me, I am singular on this ship and I do not know.

We are now limping for Saltmarsh. Jaggerjaws the Ever Hungry has lashed us to the Ship of the Line as a remora might suck up to a shark, breaking the Ship's mast and killing the Artificial One to gain a bit of speed. We now have lost our sails and rigging and Eostra-Captain has lost essin temper once or twice. L'huuna never lost her song. She is singing right this moment, making merry with the crew. We need this summer warmth! If only she would not try to make me sing. Whales cry when I sing ...

The only one I cannot find is the Little Dragon. But he is good at hiding. He will come back once he is hungry and Jaggerjaws is not.

I think we will need to leave the Ship in Saltmarsh and wait for her to be mended. I loathe the thought. But I will do as Eostra-Captain says, for essin is the mate of the Ship and knows best.

As for a second mate, the human from the sky - Tarquin - he is pretty for a human and male. He also seems nice. I will find out if he likes the Eostra-Captain. Maybe that is something I can accomplish while on dry and dour land. The Ship yearns for a Mara and maybe he would be happy to stay if I explain to him.

There is a commotion. Maybe they have found Flick. Or maybe Saltmarsh approaches.
