The Theoretical Spectrum of Arcane Strings

by Yrsa Livbein

When I was told I was going blind when I was young, I was initially afraid. Children are scared of such things but Father took me outside from the healers hut back to the marsh. He spoke of how it is natural to be scared but his mother had the same condition and it didn't stop her and it wouldn't stop me. Stopping is difficult to discuss as there are things I cannot do that someone who had perfect vision could but you learn how to flow in a new way. A river is dammed, the water rises to a new path. I think this Searing Sage nonsense may be a new path.

I had accepted it and was ready to do what I wanted regardless. Then that damned dwarf shunted me in a new direction. I am unsure the cause of this new affliction (can it be called that?) but Suleldrae advised it will kill me if I do not learn how to train it. She offered to remove it but as tempting as that was, I will face this unflinching. I am not a child. I am a daughter of Ostrana and there is nothing that can stop me.

Arcane energy, magic, whatever you want to call it appears as strings. Like spiders webs but prismatic, like the strings of Nerinai's harp. Some are wispy that I think I could blow away and some are deep and rooted, that I could not hope to destroy.

I have no idea if my theories are correct but it would be best to write these down. It is why I am re-writing my grimoire. If I die, I want my writings to survive.

As far as I can tell, there are many types of magic but these do not fit neatly into the categories that Drekka taught me. He taught me:

Abjuration - Protection from your enemies
Conjuration - Pulling forth things from other places in order to use them to hit your enemies
Illusion - Tricking your enemies
Evocation - Burning your enemies
Necromantic - Raising the beloved dead
Transmutation - Changing one thing to another thing
Enchantment - Infusing magic into a thing to make it act differently
Divination - Seeing alternatives

In these strings, I have associated each 'type' with a spectrum colour - Abjuration = Red; Conjuration = Orange; Illusion = Yellow; Evocation = Green; Necromantic = Blue; Transmutation = Indigo; Enchantment = Violet and Divination seems to be grey, colourless. The colours that I have been haphazardly associating with these now I can see the strings make these discrete categories seem rather foolish. If I enchanted someone with a protective spell, is this an enchantment or an abjuration? If I raise a beloved skeleton from thin air, is this necromancy? Conjuration? Transmuting the spirit of a departed one?

To understand the World Weave, I will need to parse the threads, see how the pattern flows around us. I think some of my comrades have magic capabilities, I will need to closely watch them and write notes. It is possible that cultural differences between our disparate nations mean that the way that they cast spells is different to Ostrana. I will need to compare and contrast. Hedonism is usually my forte but I will need to place my lust for life for something more...detached and clinical until I get something more concrete. The incidents with my own magic make me warier and I doubt having a hangover or the joyous aches and pains after a fight will be useful.

An Emilia approach, I suppose. She did scribble a fair bit in her journal. Perhaps I will watch how the others magic works.
