Lesson One - Prestidigition

by Yrsa Livbein

This was the first spell I learned from Drekka in childhood. It is...a trick, essentially. Not powerful but relatively safe for a child to learn. Admittedly, given the wide variety of effects I can create, it seems off to consider this one spell opposed to an umbrella term for many. Especially when the threads seem to be made of slightly differing colours. Mostly, the spell is Yellow - Illusionary. However, there are some minute changes that I will describe below:

- Harmless sensory effect, such as a shower of sparks, a puff of wind, faint musical notes, or an odd odour

Yellow with small strands of indigo (Transmutation) and violet (Enchantment). For every indigo and violet strand, there are at least twenty yellows.

Instantaneously light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire.

Primarily Indigo and Violet with small hints of yellow. I am not surprised at this as I am stopping a fire, not making an illusion of a fire being out.

Instantaneously clean or soil an object no larger than 1 cubic foot.

Again, primarily indigo and violet tones. The object is either clean or dirty - it is not pretending to be clean like a child throwing all their rubbish on top of their bed and covering it with a blanket.

Chill, warm, or flavour up to 1 cubic foot of non-living material for 1 hour.

Yellow, indigo and violet in equal measure with a couple of strands of green (Evocation) for the heating and chilling.

Make a colour, a small mark, or a symbol appear on an object or a surface for 1 hour.

Almost entirely yellow with a strand or two of indigo.

You create a nonmagical trinket or an illusory image that can fit in your hand and that lasts until the end of your next turn.

Depending on the object, it is either yellow with a few strands of orange (Conjuration) or entirely yellow.

After some time, I was affected by a headache and felt warm. Not an unpleasant fever but still concerning. The cool, crisp air seemed to help. I placed my hands in the snow - there was a hiss of heat. After all this, we went off into town and got some supplies. We eventually decided to call into Saran. Everything seemed normal until it wasn't. Magic pastries attacked us and I was surprisingly damaged. I never want to see icing again. I can still taste it.

During the fight with the pastries, I saw glimpses of Nerinai's magic. When she plays the lute to cast, I see the strands flow within her like water before bursting out, like waves in the strings, quivering in musical echoes. My own magic in comparison is more solid, like knitting the strands together. I managed to see a closer version when she was prestidigitating herself free of the icing. It seemed to be similar colours but again, the motion was between her fluidity and my own inflexibility. The strings flowed into her throat and echoed out - like the little song she was singing was shouting. It would be useful to meet another bard to see if this is the same across the board or whether it is just how Nerinai does it.

I will note that Suleldrae is keeping to her word. The mark seemed to abate some of the overcharging of strings and I managed to cast Identify correctly for the first time in a long time. I will continue exploring this until such time as I am back in Ostrana. There is no telling how long Suleldrae's magic can hold.
