Calanthia was forced to leave her homeland of Entemoch Boon. Her crimes carrying a death sentence for killing a member of the clan and Calanthia killed 22 people! Calanthia was forced to go to the surface, where people did not know of her.
On the surface, a Paladin was putting together a group of mercenaries. Westin Dixie, a human. There is safety in numbers, and Westin didn't ask a lot of questions. Calanthia was in need of realm coin, so she decided to join the group. Also in the group, a human with dwarfism named Aster. Pretty damn rare. I wondered if she was a half breed, but she didn't show signs of the race of dwarf. She was also shorter then I was. Something I have not encountered from the human race often, or even ever..... Her diminutive size makes people believe she is a child. She insist on being called an adult. Frankly, I believe she is trying entirely too hard to shake the child perception. Personally, I see that as a huge advantage in our line of business. A kobold who called herself The Mighty Dragon was with us. She wields magic, probably a sorcerer with a Dragon patron. Kobolds are descendants of dragons, a dragonkin, but this one seems to be trying to hard to intimidate based on her legacy. The last person in our group is Aelar, or Ael, also a rogue, a High Elven rogue. Like me, not much is know yet. The party make up seems a bit out of balance. Hopefully, the artificer who has been talking a lot of potions, can keep us in healing.
The party is getting very low on funds. West suggests we look into the Emberbound Guild for work. The process includes an interview. I don't do well under the microscope. The rules are explained to us. Aster keeps on about resources. As an artificer, she needs resources to create her items. The Emberbound leadership says she can keep all but the very rare items. Aster starts to throw a fit about keeping everything, even the most rare and powerful resources. It is explained that those resources are need for the guild to create their items for guild members. She tries hard to convince others she is an adult, but she seems to act like a child when she doesn't get her way. I attempt to remain away from the group and inconspicuous. The manager of humanoid resources asks many questions. He then turns to me and just says, I know you and winks.
I was unable to hide the surprise and confusions on my face. I ask how, and all he says is, I have heard stories. Could the events of Entemoch Boon made it up here!? Does he know I am a wanted woman? Does he know of what I did? This is not good, not good at all. I try and hide my discomfort and let West take the attention.
West eventually agrees on our behalf to the rules, despite Aster exclaiming she doesn't agree with everything. We sign our contracts, and are given an assignment to find missing supplies and a guild member. I ask if there is a possibility of the guild member being a turncoat. Highly unlikely, we are told, but don't rule it out. On the way we also sign up for a mission to deliver a package to Neverwinter.
We arrive in Neverwinter, and through some no so subtle searching, we find the potential mark. She isn't willing to show her alliance with the Emberbound. West's skills for subtle communication are lacking. She obviously is trying not to draw attention. I approach the mark and she sees my backpack bulging. She surreptitiously, moves a lid to a barrel. I see she wishes that the transaction be done stealthily. Using some basic slight of hand, I move the package into the container unseen, or I thought.
As we complete the transfer, I notice we are being scrutinized by an observer. I immediately and stealthily pursue her. She is fast, and moves through a crowd. I follow her to a vendor's booth. After some observation, I realize my target performed a pick and roll. A maneuver used by experienced rogues to duck away and divert attention to another by passing off attention to someone who resembles them. Frustrated, I return to the party and have to acknowledge she escaped.
About this time a group of thugs start parading down the street trying to intimidate the crowd. Apparently, they are employed by someone of stature in Neverwinter, and have no compunction about beating their chests about it. I see no insignia or uniform about them and they move on to the entertainment of the crowd. They all laugh heartily was they leave.
Since we completed an assignment, West suggests we return to the guild for our compensation of 100 gold and a potion of speed. Aster get the potion to analyze, in hopes to learn how to create this later. We relay all the events we experiences. With the 20 gold share, I go shopping and update my gear.
We have some downtime and I take advantage of the quiet. As I relax in my bunk, I cannot shake what he said about knowing me. Am I going to have to move on again? Will I ever be able to escape the past?
