Bodysnatchers In The Night

by Xerrakir Icemane

Coffee. What a wonderful elixir. I feel alert with an ease almost magical in nature, and yet perhaps I must regulate my dosage next time. The effects are… suffice to say I do not think it wise to consume as much as I did.

We were tasked by Sil Brew, the mayor of Quickwater, to investigate a series of body snatchings. Or rather, grave robbings. A fact he had been keeping under wraps from the town at large, not wanting to incite a panic, it seemed.

I was, I believe the term used was “buzzing”, in effect vibrating with alertness. A strange feeling, and thus I let the others take charge while I used my elevated alertness to act as lookout during our travel through the town, and later graveyard.
We split up to more effectively cover the leads we obtained, and I accompanied Kes to the Velvet Petal where we learned of a recent spate of food poisonings, apparently caused by the butcher and a bad batch of sausages. I am no butcher myself, but it seemed an odd thing for the sole butcher in a town to be unaware of such contamination. I admire how forward Kes was in their questions to Madam Waterfall. A refreshing approach to communication, one not so heavily veiled in niceties and masked opinions that I have had so much trouble with in the past. At any rate, thus we pursued this lead also, eventually meat-ing up with the rest of the group. See what I did there. *cough* Collectively, we had found several pieces of the story surrounding both the missing bodies, and the bad batch of sausages, that simply did not add up in context. Our primary suspect, at this point, was a citizen of Quickwater named Ralph. His Cart had residual magic on it, of the same school used for the levitate spell, which matched how we believed the bodies had been removed from the graveyard. Things looked like they were going to be going poorly, and I fired a warning shot. Though that was a hasty action I regret. Openly moving against a citizen as a newcomer will not do anything for my image. I must be better.

Ralph confessed, and we have apprehended him after a small scuffle.

I know, more than most, how being quick to violence is not always the answer. The Great Wheel is a dangerous expanse, and violence is often a necessary course of action. But It is heartening that my new companions, while certainly capable of great violence, choose more often to subdue or parlay as a first response. I think I’m talking too much. Is that the coffee? Hmm. Breathe, Xerrakir.

I like them. I think you will too, Venator. Though fear not, we shall still have our fill of hunting here. I can feel it. Our training will not languish.

On that note, I think it’s almost time to bring you here. Our connection strengthens daily.

I will see you soon, my son
