Personal history
Ren Fujiwara grew up in Valland City, the Kazoku base and capital, of the Nobuyoki family as a legacy gangster trained and guided in the clan’s cultural values and methods of violence. Under the critique of a first lieutenant elven father, Ren desired to achieve the best in her studies and training, which led to private lessons from the Shiko and Denbe families in stealth and magic. Seeking to follow in her father’s prestige, Ren became not only one of the youngest but one of the only women to become a second lieutenant, serving under her father. Ren’s absent mother was her father’s human mistress, dying in childbirth and leaving her father to be Ren’s sole influence in all things.
When the Great Blackout surged, Ren failed to protect her father from the overwhelming stream of demonic fire monsters raining down on her regiment–causing her to lose the only family and love she’d ever had. Coming to the aid of the lives of a group of women and children cornered by the beasts, Ren was late to realize her own father’s peril. She hastily tried to cut down the monsters in her way but failed to get to him in time, watching as the creatures descended on top of her father’s squadron. The acrid stench of burning flesh and wails of pain have haunted her every waking and resting moment every day after. During the clan’s recuperation, the discovery of Ren’s negligence and incompetence regarding the priority of her direct superior’s safety–choosing to save civilian lives instead–called for her immediate execution from the Kazoku. This gave Ren no choice but to run away from the only life she’s ever known and dishonor the code embedded in her bones in order to avenge her father's death.
Dejected from the punishment but determined to grapple her way back into their ranks, Ren took up residence in the infamous crime-ridden city of Malheur on a personal crusade to eradicate the Kazoku’s criminal competition–and simultaneously hoping to uncover the identity of the Great Blackout’s instigator to exact revenge for her father’s death. In the months following the Great Blackout, ronin Ren Fujiwara has been prowling the night in search of victims–and always ending up bloodied by sunrise–earning her the title of “vigilante” in the city’s media. Brandishing the label with disciplined anonymity and pride, Ren feels she is close to reclaiming her status, along with healing her own broken heart in the company of her hacker girlfriend and their black kitten. When the proposition of a mission to eradicate the Null Division is presented before her, Ren feels she cannot pass up this opportunity that could reinstate her position in the Kazoku. Combined with the possibility of the team's finding and killing Jinx, pioneer of the Great Blackout and her father's death, Ren is desperate to reconcile her past and will stop at nothing to do so.
