Personal history

I was too young to understand it all when it happened. My mother urged me to hide as dark, angry shadows fell through the cracks in the wall. My father took an axe in hand as he hurried outside. I remember the muffled screams vividly. After that, I never saw them again.
 
The house felt desolate, and only evoked feelings of sadness. I stayed there for as long as I could mentally bear before I set out to live in the streets. I had never been more grateful for the warm climate I lived in.
 
I taught myself to steal and beg so I could survive, learning what mask to put on in order to increase my chances of succes. Whatever urchin I would find seemed keen to follow, but I never pictured myself as the leader-type. I just felt the need to help those as downtrodden as I was.
 
It took on the persona of a human boy with a knack for subtlety, with the unspoken name of Miguel Aquilo. Through my many rogueish adventures, I earned the nickname Fleetstep from my friends on the streets. I gathered enough food and drink every day to sustain myself, and I always had leftovers to hand out.
 
One fateful day, I happened upon a man, some kind of pale, almost sickly looking elf. The sight of him made me feel ill, but what truly caught my eye was that angrily waving shadow, following his every move, almost seeming to lash out at those around him.
 
I didn't know if this was the same person, or simply a member of the same race, but my young mind was filled with nothing but anger. I started stalking this man, leaving the most silent of footsteps as I went.
 
I managed to learn why he was here, what he was planning to achieve and how, over the course of many days. Apparently he was part of a society dedicated to the Raven Queen. A group of shadar-kai, traveling between the material plane and the Plane of Shadow to do her bidding. Apparently obsessed with the collection of memories, they were kidnapping changelings for their ability to memorize and replicate any face they ever saw.
 
And my city was his assigned territory.
 
In the middle of the night, I followed him to his abode. I waited for a good amount of time for him to fall asleep, and crept inside through a window. The place seemed dark and desolate, almost colorless, filled with gloom, and it reminded me of home. And there in his bed, the man lay. Eyes wide open, yet unmoving. I recognized him, but his body looked much older than normal, blighted by the dark aura that enveloped the room.
 
I stabbed him in the neck, as quick and painless as I could manage. The body turned pitch black, succumbing to the shadowy curse that lay dormant, but was ever present. The shadows seeped onto my blade, and I felt the chill of dread travel up my arm into my very being. I pulled the blade out, clutched my arm and swiftly made my retreat.
 
It did not feel liberating to kill him. All I was left with was a feeling of dread and despair. It felt as if my soul was being pulled out of my body at times. Shadowfell has taken a hold of me, but I soon came to realize it gave me back something in return.
 
Even if I have decided to use my newfound powers of sorcery for good, the Plane of Shadow still beckons me, and I will do everything in my power to resist it.

Motivation

Survival is their biggest priority, and it has been for as long as they can remember. However, time spent with those whose friendship they value have taught them that sole survival would not be worth the loss of a friend.

Religious Views

Their mother strongly believed in The Traveler, and how he had bestowed his gift upon their people. Nill was never sure what to believe, but calls upon The Traveler in desperate times, as they know their mother would.

Social Aptitude

Highly dependent on their persona; Arinae is outgoing and confident, while Fleetstep is introverted and soft-spoken. Nill can be both, but a clear change in vocal inflections can reveal which persona is talking.
