Personal history
Ewan Muller (Father):
Ewan Muller was born in Marthsford; his mother died in childbirth, and he was raised by his father, a retired member of the Marthsford provincial army. While growing up, his father pressured Ewan to follow in his footsteps and sign up for the military in Marthsford. Despite his father's insistence on pursuing his career path, Ewan was more interested in growing plants and healing people than slaying them with swords. Often buying books on herbalism from the market, he would also take plants from the cave walls of Marthsford and grow them in his room to practice what he learned. In one of these books, Ewan learned of the talented apothecaries in Jorven, who utilized the land's unique climate for growing medicinal herbs and spices. At the age of nineteen, he ran away from home to Jorven to become a doctor.
Joanna Gestein (Mother):
Joanna Gestein was born in Atropia, a town on the outskirts of Jorven named after their main export, deadly nightshade: a herb used to create pain relievers and poisons for hunting; her parents were gardeners and apothecaries and took up her parent's trade. Despite her parents being skilled gardeners, Joanna was the opposite, often forgetting to water her plants, accidentally dig too deep a hole for the plant to grow, or planting them in her neighbor's front yard instead of her own. Despite being a terrible gardener, Joanna was amazingly skilled at herbalism and identifying plants. She could identify most plants just by glancing at them for a second, listing their various uses from medicinal to cooking. When she was eighteen, she went under the apprentice of a man named Anderson Braun to become an apothecary. During this time, Ewan Muller arrived in Atropia, and, after wandering through town, he eventually found Braun's Hospital and requested that he take him in as an apprentice. Braun was doubtful that this young man was worthy of becoming his apprentice but decided to humor him and gave him a test to prove how knowledgeable he was in apothecary. Ewan passed Bruan's test and became his apprentice. Joanna and Ewan trained under Braun's tutorage for several years and eventually fell in love. After seven years, they completed their apprenticeship and married; Ewan changed his last to Gestein, due to him disliking his father. They worked in Braun's Hospital for a couple of years, eventually inheriting it after Braun retired. In 190 IBC, Joanna gave birth to Freja, and in 194 IBC, she gave birth to Finn.
Childhood:
Freja was born on the twelfth day of Crescent Harvest Moon, in 190 IBC. Growing up, Ewan and Joanna educated Freja. Eventually, they attempted to teach her gardening and herbalism, but Freja lacked interest and the patience to take up her parent's trade. Due to her hatred of studying, she rejected any form of learning from her parents. Ewan, not wanting to be like his father, let Freja figure out what she wanted to do independently and didn't pressure her into learning anything. She instead spent most of her time hanging out with her small group of friends: who were a small group of pompous, rich (for Jorven standards) and loud-mouthed teenagers. Despite clashing with Freja's humble and shy personality at the time, they got along quite well. When Freja was fifteen, one of her friends got drafted into the outriders. Due to their dislike of authority, Freja's Friends decided to run away from Joven to keep him from becoming an outrider. They offered Freja to come with them, but she declined due to wanting to stay with her family and being scared of breaking the law. Due to all her friends leaving Atropia, Freja spent most of her time by herself but eventually started to rekindle her relationship with her family, whom she had barely talked to a year prior.
The next year, Freja had gotten a job working in her parent's garden with Finn, although her lack of patience made her not the best candidate for gardening, often getting angry at plants that had
wilted due to her forgetfulness. One day after working in the garden with Finn, Freja decided to head home early after getting annoyed. While on the way home, she decided to head to the hospital to ask her parents if she could get a raise in her pay (although leaving her job early and then asking for a raise wasn't the best idea, she decided to do it anyway).
Freja entered the hospital to find it ransacked and her parents murdered. Freja was in a state of shock, unable to move, but eventually, she forced herself outside the building, her mind in a haze as she walked towards the nearest town guard, muttering to him that a murder had occurred inside the hospital. The town guard, confused by Freja's statement (Almost all of the "crimes" in Atropia consist of children pulling pranks), attempted to get information on what happened, but Freja stood there, frozen. Seeing that was Freja was distraught and questioning her wasn't going to go anywhere, the guard decided to head inside the hospital. Time seemed to fly for Freja after this; the town guard left the building shortly after entering it, yelling something to a passerby. Soon after, almost all of Atropia's Garrison was at the scene moving in and out of the hospital. Repeatedly, one of them would come up and question her, but she stayed silent, wanting to be alone with her thoughts.
"Freja, sitting here at the scene of the crime isn't going to help; it probably best if you headed home."
Freja then heard a familiar voice, Anderson Braun, a family friend whom she had known since childhood. Anderson Braun was a person who almost always acted distant, often really only being present when his didactic personality took hold. Although it was a brief sentence, Braun's attitude didn't seem at all different from his usual self; Freja took an odd comfort in this familiarity and snapped out of her paralyzed state. She decided to follow Braun, heading away from the scene of the crime to her home. After the murder, Finn & Freja stayed at the home of Anderson Braun due to Braun insisting that being at home would only bring back bad memories. Freja & Finn, both stricken with grief, agreed. Freja spent most of her days after the murder lying in bed, not wanting to do anything but sleep. After two weeks, Freja & Finn tried to get their lives back to normal. Although it was too painful to head inside their parent's house, they decided to start a garden in the backyard of Braun's House.
Adulthood:
After getting their life back to normal, Freja turned sixteen, thus making her the age to be conscripted into the outriders; Freja dismissed this, assuming that it would be a one in a million chance they picked her. But her assumption was wrong; an outrider recruiting group entered Atropia and sent her a recruiting notice giving her a few days to pack up her stuff. Freja, pissed that the outriders wanted to separate her from her brother after the tragedy of her parent's death, decided to follow what her friends had done a year prior and, with the help of Braun, she left Atropia with Finn. After running away from their home, Freja and Finn spent most of their time wandering from town to town; Freja attempted to take small jobs to buy food and water, but often this would only amount to a few brass pennies. After two years of surviving on a minimal amount of food, Freja & Finn's routine of going from town to town was interrupted by a group of bandits, who, after pretending to rob them as a joke, revealed themselves to be Freja's old friends.
Freja then reconnected with her old friends. Eli, the head of the group, explained to Freja that they had become a bandit group to take revenge on the higher-ups for putting an abrupt end to their lives in Atropia, stealing from wealthy merchants and travelers. Freja agreeing with the sentiment, decided to join them. Freja & Finn then spent the next year with Eli's bandit group, but Freja quickly found that her new quiet personality clashed with the more upbeat nature of the group. Despite this, she felt a sense of camaraderie with the group. During one of the many highway robberies, this feeling would disappear. During the robbery of a noble from Jorven, Eli got upset at the noble for insulting him and murdered him on the spot, all while taunting him in retaliation for the insult. The rest of the group remained unfazed. Despite the shock and sickening feeling in her stomach of watching her friend murder someone in cold blood, Freja decided to stay quiet. Later that night, Freja chose to leave the group. Freja woke up Finn, told him what happened. Shocked that Eli would murder someone Finn agreed to go. Freja & Finn stole the group's supplies and left. After spending a year living off with the goods they stole from Eli, they eventually ran out. Despite having no food, they still had a good bit of money from the highway robberies Eli had committed. Freja and Finn decided to go into town and buy some food. Once inside the town, Freja and Finn were recognized from a wanted poster. They were arrested and conscripted into the outriders.
