Appearance
Physical Description
(More details once the Artwork is done)
Their shape is humanoid, so they have 2 arms and 2 legs, no tail.
Their Arms and legs are just a little too long for their torso, giving them a slightly uncanny look.
Their skin is pale white.
Facial Features
They have a single big, yellow eye in the middle of their face. Their mouth is just a little wider, than you'd expect, and filled with sharp teeth of a predator. They have two, meaty, antenna on their head, with eyes where they meet the skull. They don't have much of a nose, more like 2 visible slits.
Identifying Characteristics
Instead of hair, they have a number of eye-stalks on their head. They can move each of them individually, but usually they just hang down like weird, fleshy, dreadlocks.
They also have a long gray Tentacle with purple eyes coming out of the back of their head. This one is normally only about as big as their forearm, but grows to around 5 feet (1.5 m) when they summon their Tentacle Eyesenberg. Unlike Eyesenberg however, this tentacle lacks the strength or dexterity to deal any real damage in combat, other than potentially unsettling their opponent. (Their unarmed Strikes literally deal 0 damage because Strenght of 8).
Apparel & Accessories
They are usually wearing a simple Traveler's cloak, with a big hood, that can be removed. Other than that, they have an Amulet with a big gemstone eye as the centerpiece, which helps them channel their spells.
The Amulet is called “The Eye of the Beholder”
Special abilities
Their Amulet (Mask of Many Faces invocation) allows them to change their appearance at will. This is purely visual and will quickly be revealed to be an Illusion, if you were to touch them.
Their day-to-day disguise is Hazel, a male Half-Elf, with tan skin, light brown dreadlocks and light gray eyes, that show a bit of yellow when they are casting spells.
Additionally, they (currently) have 2 other disguises:
Mentality
Personal history
The great Beholder Voldoch had a dream. He dreamt of a form more useful for infiltrating the mortal races. It was a good dream. Over are the days of having to painfully kidnap people. Now all he'd have to do is walk among them, without the hassle of killing their so-called guards and heroes.
Unbeknownst to him, this very dream spawned a beholderkin, the very form that the great Voldoch dreamt of. It was curious and innocent. They saw a great flying sphere of flesh and eyes. It seems … familiar in some way. They found a grand pile of jewelry, made of metal and gem. Most of them seemed boring, except for one: A small amulet, with a grand eye made of gemstone in the middle. It spoke to the young Beholderkin, so they took it. After all, if it is only lying within this pile, surely it wouldn't be missed?
When the great Voldoch woke up, he saw it. The wretch, the intruder, the Fiend. What was it doing here? Why does it seem so familiar? No matter, it was an intruder, and it must therefore die. Surely it came to rob this place and kill him in his sleep.
“UNHOLD!” (Fiend), they bellowed out. “Du solltest nicht hier sein!” (You shouldn't be here!). “Also STIRB!” (So DIE!)
The great sphere of flesh and eyes woke up. It took a second to look around, spotted the young Beholderkin, and bellowed out a furious roar. They took a moment to think over what was said. They had been named! Then they processed the rest of what the Beholder said and decided that it was best to run. After all, dying would be suboptimal.
The great Voldoch was not worried. His lair was filled with deadly traps that have a chance of even killing another beholder, after all. That is, until he noticed where the intruder was running: The Teleportarium! He considered it a waste to set up traps there, after all it was the deepest part of the lair, and it only worked as an exit, so why bother? The great Voldoch was worried now. He felt that the fiend stole one of his artifacts. Not the most powerful, he barely used it anymore, but it was one of a kind. He could NOT let this thing leave alive.
Fiend ran as fast as they could. They felt the sphere catching up. And it was angry. Their own eye-stalks were busy shooting beams of fire, ice and pure kinetic energy at the beams from their progenitor. It was not enough to stop all of them, but they were alive and that was all that mattered. After running for what felt like half a lifetime (which made sense, considering that he was only a few hours old), they finally reached a strange room. It was a dead end! There was, however, some strange formation of crystals and gold in an arcane pattern on the floor. Fiend had no idea what it was, but they were desperate. With their last strength, they stepped inside and simply thought, that they wanted to be literally ANYWHERE that isn't here. And the Teleportarium fired up.
The great Voldoch was getting annoyed. This dirty wretch was nimble! It even dared to counter his spells. The audacity! But he had it cornered now. It was inside the Teleportarium, a special Teleportation Circle that could transcend planes. But more importantly, it only activated for Beholders like him. He was about to start a monologue about the fealty of this creature's little escape and how it should fear… wait, where did it go?
Fiend found themself drained of all their energy, and their mind went dark. When they woke back up, they felt weak and drained, like they lost something that they didn't even know they had. They looked around and fount out, that they were at the edge of a Village. He would later find out, that this village was part of the flying nation, Sora.
When Fiend entered the Village, they were met with a mix of (mostly) negative reactions and was quickly chased away. They hid away from civilization as best as they could, though confrontation was inevitable. Eventually they were attacked by a bandit. The bandit was dispatched easily by Fiend, with the help of Eyesenberg, but this encounter gave them an idea. They had a feeling, within them, that they could change their looks, at least visually, using their amulet. And sure enough, what was once Fiend now looked like the Elf, that he killed just a few minutes ago. Fiend decided that this would be their go-to Form from now on and named it Hazel for the color of their Hair.
Some Time passed and Hazel found out more about the Nation he was in (full information in the Scrapbook). He learned about the Continent of Vora and the other nations spread around it. He decided that he would explore them to gather whatever Knowledge he could.
First on the list was Viridis, also known as the Greenlands. It was divided in three parts and Hazel ended up within Baska first. It was a nice place. Filled to the brim with greenery and color. The people were pleasant as well. He was optimistic and even tried shoving their true form in a small village. The reactions were mixed, but not hostile. They decided that they would continue traveling as Hazel, but this still gave them hope.
Next up was Raska. This place was mostly swamp and wetlands. The atmosphere was glum and the people were nowhere near as charming or forthcoming as in Baska, though they weren't hostile either. The entire place was feeling a bit empty, but it was still a pretty enjoyable place, all things considered.
Finally, there was Taska. A vibrant place and teeming with even more activity than Baska. The people were charming and there were regular festivities, similar to Baska. It was here, that Hazel found out about the World Tree. It was a giant tree in the middle of the Greenlands that was worshiped, as a gift from the gods or something of the sorts.
After spending some 3 and a half years in the Greenlands, Hazel decided to go visit Súna. Since Súna was in some kind of disagreement with the neighboring Nasú and Hazel really didn't want to be caught in some kind of war, he decided to keep his stay in the two countries relatively brief. It was here, that Hazel decided to forge a second disguise to better fit in while in Súna. He noticed that Fire Genasi were quite common and decided to create the persona of Irys, a female Fire Genasi.
In her brief stay within Súna, Irys found out that the people despise Nasú. Additionally, she found out, that they worship [INSERT NAME], The Bright Future, who is a goddess of the Sun.
After her stay in Súna she decided to visit Nasú. She had to go back to the Greenlands in order to even find a ship, willing to take her there. On the way she decided to change back into Hazel, since Fire Genasi might not be too welcome in Nasú, especially since she (officially) believed in the Bright Future.
In Nasú, Hazel found out that the hate between the two countries is mutual. He tried dropping his disguise but was met with mostly negative reactions. A lesson was learned: Don't go out in public without a disguise (if possible). The entire place was in a sort of eternal twilight, which really messed with Hazels day/night cycle. He learned, that the people of Nasú worship [INSERT NAME], The Light in the Dark and goddess of the Moon.
The last Nation left unvisited was Anacra and therefore, the next destination. Upon trying to enter one of the cities, a guard manages to spot Hazels disguise. The situation could only be resolved through some underhanded casting of Charm Person. Since this city seemed to be highly adept at magic, Hazel decided that dropping the disguise while staying here would be the best option, even if it meant, that they would draw attention to themself.
While in walking around the city, Fiend found themself at the center of attention and the target of many a hushed discussion. They were, however, not met with hostility, but instead genuine interest. It is here, that they met Roger Teva, some kind of artificer, or tinkerer, perhaps. After acquaintances were made and Information was exchanged, Fiend offered to answer Roger's questions and take part in some experiments in exchange for Information about the city and its people (as well as a place to stay).
A couple of weeks passed, and Fiend (still going by Hazel at this point) began to see Roger as a friend. This tranquility was, however, disturbed as some armored figures decided that they would search Roger's place, presumably for Fiend. Vella, Roger's familiar, helped Fiend to escape to some small hut just outside the city using some kind of magic stone. She also left behind another stone, which has some weird runes carved into it.
Fiend decided, that they do not like this place and went back to the Greenlands. They hoped that Roger was alright, but decided that going back to check on them would not be a wise choice right now, and staying in this city would only be dangerous for themself.
Back in the Greenlands, Fiend crafted a third persona: Cyrus, a male Tabaxi with brown fur and blue eyes, wearing fancy blue and green clothing and a big hat, adorned with an eye. This fuzzball fit right in, in the colorful Baska and Taska. They spend most of their time here, traveling from town to town, occasionally staying in a place for a couple of months or a year, doing whatever was offered at the black board. That is, until the event...
Fiend had been switching between Cyrus, Hazel and, occasionally, Irys while going through Baska and Taska. They had just arrived in a medium-sized Town in central Baska as Hazel. He spent some time getting to know the Town and it's people. After getting set in the local inn, he looked at the Blackboard. There were the usual contenders: lost pet, need a farmhand, etc. but one of the jobs stood out:
Apparently, someone named Vik was looking for some crystals in Moupor and was offering a reward of 5000 Gold. The Job was also written on some very fine paper, instead of the more common parchment.
While the money was somewhat appealing, Hazels main interest was in the job itself. What kind of crystals? Why in Moupor? Where even is Moupor?
Needless to say, Hazel was quite intrigued. That same night, he had a dream. This dream, however, was different from normal dreams, it felt real, maybe even too real. He dreamt of a road and some group of adventurer looking fellows. And when he woke up the next morning, he could still see them - and they could see him as well.
Employment
No long term employment, does whatever jobs they can find when they need money or see an opportunity to gain knowledge.
Accomplishments & Achievements
They managed to not only escape the Far Realms, but also steal an Amulet from their Progenitor, granting them some Otherworldly Powers.
(Amulet is the source of their Warlock levels. Pact of the Talisman, if I ever take a third Warlock level.)
Failures & Embarrassments
Due to their more specialized Form and young age, they were already weaker than a regular Beholder.
The device they used to open a Portal to escape the Beholders Lair and (unbeknownst to them) the Far Realm, drained them of most of their Power, leaving them only slightly stronger than the average Luvan.
When entering Anacra, their disguise got busted, and they had to resort to magic in order to enter the city. After that they met Roger, where they stayed for a while. Some people came looking for them, and they only escaped due to Roger's familiar, Vella.
Mental Trauma
They have been alone for most of their live, and the first creature (and progenitor) they met, has tried to kill them. Additionally, most people seem to react negatively to their natural Form.
This leads them to be fairly paranoid (though less extreme than a fully fledged Beholder), but also lacking affection. They might not realize it, but they secretly crave social contact for the sake of itself, not just gaining knowledge.
Intellectual Characteristics
They have theoretical knowledge in many fields, especially magic and deep knowledge in few, very specific topics, but lack practical experience. Some of their Knowledge might also be outdated by several Millennia or outright wrong.
Morality & Philosophy
“Knowledge must be well documented and preserved for the future. It is above all. I may share my Knowledge if it would lead me to acquire more in the future (directly or indirectly).”
“Acquiring and documenting Knowledge is my main priority, though I may forego an opportunity to gain knowledge, if it would allow me to collect more in the future.”
“Life, be it Luva, Abberation or Beast, is a resource like any other. It is more valuable than most, but I do not mind spending some, if it will lead me to a net positive gain in resource.”

Personality
Motivation
They seek knowledge above all else. While their main interest lays in Culture, Society and the Luvan Mind, they seek to collect and preserve all kinds of Knowledge.
While Money itself does not hold any value for them, they do realize that it can be exchanged for goods and services, including knowledge.
Quotes & Catchphrases
Beauty lies in the Eye of the Beholder— Fiend, while pointing at their amulet
Vices & Personality flaws
While they have learned to put on a quite convincing act as a proper Luvan, they seem to have trouble discerning truths from falsehoods.
They are also quite happy to use magic, especially enchantments, to get their way.
Personality Quirks
When casting a spell, (at least) one of their eyes begins to glow.
If they are using one of their many disguises, their eyes also glow a soft yellow. This can be suppressed, though it requires some concentration, which is usually not worth it.
Every evening, they write down the events of the day and any knowledge they gained inside their Notebook. (Written in Deep Speech)

Family Ties
Their progenitor will kill them on sight, no other family members. Their tentacle “Eyesenberg” is something like a pet for them.

Views Religion as a tool to get more power. They personally are not interested in binding themself to some god, though they find the concept interesting.
