The Maelstrom Blade

by Tycho Ralesh

The knock at the door was Li’ell’s, but forceful and off tempo. She didn't wait for my leave, marched in briskly and set a book upon my desk. I recognized it; a book of lore liberated from Iggwilv's inner sanctum...one I had yet to examine. Li'ell waited; she hadn't calculated what would happen, and that was peculiar...peculiar that she hadn’t, peculiar that it showed. I glanced at the book, almost apprehensively. I didn’t know what to expect, but I could feel destiny charging the air around me, building a luminous, almost stifling weight. As I moved forward, she pointed to a particular passage, and it suddenly loomed large and vivid as all else recede away.

"Drunken tales abound of the cat-eyed thief, Ashen Grey, brandishing his black bladed swords and felling minions and champions alike. Though many accounts of his prowess are surly embellished, his name has not traveled down dangerous roads without cause.

Cocksure and fearless, he charged his enemies seemingly transformed into a maelstrom vortex of scything blades. Ashen bewildered opponents, weaving his body and whirling his blades, deftly evading attacks as he leapt and tumbled. Feigning strike upon strike he unbalanced his foes; deathblows were sudden and precise, piercing flesh and bone from impossible angles. Woe be to those who raised the ire of the Maelstrom Blade."

I stared at the passage over-long, increasingly aware that I was blinking at unnatural intervals. Li’ell finally spoke:

“Had you...seen this passage in some other tome?” My expression left no doubt that I had not. She continued: “You told me that before you met Keldimir...you told me your life had turned to ash and grey. Those words always struck me—ash and grey. Now we have this tale, the tale of Ashen Grey? A cat-eyed man...a leaping, tumbling man brandishing two swords...a man known as the Maelstrom Blade? This is you Tycho: uncannily you. Yet these words were put to ink before you were born...before I was born, and they tell tales older still.”

I was gazing at my reflection in a pane of glass. I contracted my pupils, a trick I use to unnerve my foes. My subtly fiendish eyes became cat-like indeed: fields of clarion green punctuated by thin, inky slits.

Had Keldimir known this tale, and planted a ‘destiny’ in my mind? Or was he a figment of Sylvexen’s machinations, leading me along her designs? Had I lived before, in some distant time by some other name? Had Keldimir somehow possessed me, and others before me, living through us each in turn without our knowing? I was dizzy with a cacophony of wildly divergent thoughts. None coherent. I came back to my senses and thanked Li’ell for these tidings; I asked a moment to consider their weight. She placed a hand on my shoulder, inviting me, should I seek her comforts, and quietly departed.

I resolved myself. I am not Keldimir, nor am I Ashen Grey. I am only what my deeds make of me. Mine shall be the deeds of Tobias Tycho Ralesh, now become The Maelstrom Blade.

The major events and journals in Tycho's history, from the beginning to today.

Tycho’s Bastion is an old sailing ship he christened The Humble Ogre. The ship was derelict an Tycho and his crew have overseen the refit. It typically births at the Old Dock, which is his brother Ilias’ Bastion (making a joint Bastion when docked there). The design falls somewhere between a xebec and brig with three masts, two interior decks and an aft castle. Tycho has tapped old acquaintances and Family connections to form the core of his officers and crew. His growing reputation as a renegade Rhennee, and the audacity of his ship has drawn the rest. His Family, now aware of Tycho’s taboo dabbling with magic, still desire to welcome the Ogre into their flotilla. They have dispatched an elder Vetha, Ilsa ‘The Silver Siren’ Ralesh, to instruct the crew and judge Tycho’s transgressions against Rhennee ‘law.’

Notes on Tycho’s Spell Use: Tycho is a primarily melee-based character that will predominantly have caster levels. His spell use in combat is focused on augmenting his bodily prowess, instead of manifesting as death rays, hypnotic lights, or icy blasts. His magic tends to be subtle from a sensory perspective, and the effects often seem to manifest as uncanny agility, speed, and accuracy. A spell like Shield, for example, lends Tycho the anticipation and agility to evade attacks, rather than appearing as an interposing wall of force. Though Tycho might use the fly spell to soar through the air if necessary, he generally will stay close to the ground, augmenting his movement with jumps against the ground or walls, extended by flight. Thus, he appears to leap astounding distances (80 feet or so) with a buoyant quality (think Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon). Even Thundrwave will generally be triggered only after making a long leap, as if his landing caused the shockwave. The idea is to ground spell effects in physical, bodily actions whenever possible. For the same reason, Tycho only uses offensive magic that augments or directly generates melee attack damage (Hex, Steel Wind Strike, CME), with a few touch and close burst exceptions like Chill Touch and Thunderwave. His primary damage augments will be Hex and much later CEM (AKA Maelstrom Dervish), which are concentration spells. In terms of flavor, Tycho can do extraordinary damage when he can maintain his battle trance, which affords him heightened speed and ability. To maintain the theme, some of Tycho’s spells have been re-flavored to have melee focused descriptions, while remaining mechanically identical. Conjure Minor Elementals, for example, is re-flavored as Maelstrom Dervish. Tycho will also employ illusions, beguiling spells, and spells of subterfuge, as well as self-buffs and defensive magic. Tycho will not use ‘blaster’ or ranged AOE spells like Eldritch Blast, Fireball, Hunger of Hadar, etc.

Sylvexen is a lesser Fey Lord, a spirit of the river lands. She has watched the Rhennee since their arrival in the Flanaess, occasionally chooses among them for champions. None, however, in living memory. In accordance with Rhennee culture, she typically chooses females, and Tycho is the first male in over two centuries. She manifests in the material realm occasionally, particular among the Rhennee. During these visits, she assumes a towering Avatar. She generally prefers to visit in dreams and vision, however, using her disorienting, euphoria inducing Dreamform. She lends favor in times of need, particularly during great storms, and sometimes saves single ships or individuals from a water death. She provides subtly in lean times. When she chooses a champion or champions from the Folk, she obliges them only to be leaders in of times of plenty or defenders in times of turmoil. Tycho is currently one of her champions; one she has chosen to be a warrior and for whom she may have more specific plans. She has alluded to Tycho's destiny several times, but he half believes that she has plucked these thoughts from his mind and is using them to manipulate him. He wants to believe, however; he wants to believe he is destined to be the Maelstrom Blade, and that she is part of that journey. Sylvexen saved Tycho and Ilias when they were 5 years old and drowning. Tycho swore a non-binding pact with her at that time, though that faded to a dubious memory over the years. When Tycho was on death's door, she visited him again, and he renewed his Pact out of duty and desperation. She has instilled Tycho with the belief that the Rhennee were once denizens of the Faerie, and have lost touch with their roots in their exile.
