Kyla is the only child of Gerald Potter and Hannah Emmerich. Gerald left Kyla and Hannah before Kyla was old enough to speak, leaving Hannah to raise her on her own for three years. Kyla later chose to take on her mother's surname to fully disconnect from her estranged father.
Hannah met Howard Benson and the two fell in love. Kyla warmed up to Howard quickly and it didn't take her long to see him as a father figure when his relationship with Hannah grew serious.
When Kyla was nine, she witnessed her mother be struck and killed in a hit-and-run incident with a car. Since the event, Kyla threw up a mental barrier and she became very closed off and reserved, rarely talking to anyone apart from Howard. Howard continued to raise Kyla as if she were his own daughter.
Kyla went on to study Criminal Law and Computing Technology at the University of New Hampton, passing with above average grades. Though qualified, she was not willing to join the New Hampton Police Force, instead opting to go into business for herself, becoming a private investigator.
She will occasionally work alongside the NHPD to help follow leads for investigations or assist with missing persons cases which helps free up detectives for more high-priority cases.
