Was born on a farm with two parents and a younger sister who was 7 years younger than him. When Gauzelin was 11 years old, his parents were killed by a criminal. He and his sister were taken in by the clergy of a temple of Helm. The clergy told Gauzelin that they interred his parents' corpses into a hallow site to consecrate their deaths. However, one day when Gauzelin was 13 years old, the monastery was attacked by an undead horde, and Gauzelin saw that one of the undead was his own mother. Though she, and the rest of the horde, was slain by a combined effort between the clergy there and the local militia, Gauzelin was horrified and realized that the clergy lied to him. At best, they were too incompetent to secure their corpses before being stolen and lied to cover it up. At worst, they deliberately neglected to consecrate the corpses. Some suspect this had to do with discrimination towards interracial families, such as Gauzelin's. Additionally, during the attack, his sister went missing amidst all the chaos. They were never able to find her body, and, in Gauzelin's opinion, the clergy only made a small effort in trying to find her. Though Gauzelin admired the tenets of Helm, he felt unsatisfied with the way the clergy had been handling these situations, so when one of the visitors from another Helm church, revealed to him in secret of another religious sect that put greater emphasis on consecrating the dead, Gauzelin was quick to listen and befriend this visitor. This man called himself Kram, and with time, the two conspired together to form their own religion worshiping a false god named Pharasma (though they believed this god to be the true god of death and fate) through which they could carry out what the other churches would not, taking a more aggressive approach against the forces of undeath and those who contribute towards such perversion of natural death. Gauzelin would continue to maintain the clerical lifestyle at the monastery, pretending to worship Helm until he was 15 years old, but then fled and met with Kram, whose real name was Mirkram Whitehallow, to become fully inaugurated into his Cult of Pharasma.
Here, Gauzelin felt like the combat training would actually make a difference in avenging the desecration of his parents, possibly rescuing his sister, and putting his father to rest, since he probably became undead the same way his mother was. In the mean time, he would put his skills to use by confronting members of the criminal underworld that were involved in corpse trafficking, attempting to kill them and find the whereabouts of the necromancers with whom they did business with. In Gauzelin's mind, these killings were acts of justice. When Mirkram found out how far Gauzelin was taking his endeavors, to his surprise, Mirkram was only pleased by these activities. And so, the cult also trained Gauzelin in espionage so that he could carry out such assassinations in secret, avoiding trouble with the law. Though, doing this repeatedly over the years has caused Gauzelin to develop some sadistic tendencies.
When interacting with people outside the cult, Gauzelin keeps his true religious affiliation a secret and pretends to be a cleric of one of the good-aligned religions of the area. At one point, he even joined a clergy of Tyr, with the people at the temple believing that his paladin power was granted to him by his faith in Tyr. He secretly tries steering people of other faiths to become more like that of his cult.
He is quick to become angry and dehumanize people who contribute towards necromancy in some way, though he is good at hiding his emotions. He often becomes obsessive in his endeavors to hunt down a target who he deems deserving of death.
He is usually in a grumpy mood and avoids small talk.
Following the events of The Elversult Disaster, Gauzelin spent a lot of time keeping track of fellow party member, Ebzire Rorvel, and his activities due to a concern with the changes that occured in him leading up to and during the party's trip into Hell. After finding evidence of him murdering his own father, and attempting to corrupt his brother, he brought this to the rest of the party, determined to officially remove Ebzire from their number. The group killed and banished Ebzire, for a time, giving a clear message of their intent.
Following this, Gauzelin turned his attention to the City of Shade, deciding to assist with the hunt for the phaerimm. He keeps out of political events, and after a while he finds himself the final member of his original party in the material plane. Once the hunt for the phaerimm seems to mostly wrap up, he returns to Lavish to assist Valerie Hex with managing things there.
