Patriarch Kalyu is the Patriarch of Pravdan Church. His fiery sermons of resistance through mercy brought many to the Pravda. He is wise in his years and a warm soul, though he can come off as overzealous and judgemental.
Patriarch Kalyu is the reigning patriarch of the Kingdom of Palischuk, and presides over the Kingdom's spiritual matters, serving as King Markus Lyubov's closest advisor.
Born in 1413 DR, Patriarch Kalyu was born in Palischuk as Kalyu Rodionov, a serf under the Order of the Warlock Knights. Young Kalyu helped his father, a fisherman, until 1454, when he would take over a bustling family business. His whole life, he never thought much on religion or spirituality, just trying to get past each day without incurring the wrath of the Order.
In 1478 DR, he would hear of the visions that Rurik Zorin, a serf from neighboring Obnigrad, had been experiencing. He traveled to Obnigrad, where Rurik would teach Kalyu about Gospod, the Gospel of Merc and the coming peace that Gospod promised through the ideals of the Pravda. Inspired by this, Kalyu sold off all his possessions and joined Rurik in preaching the message of Gospod, focusing on evangelizing Palischuk. The Warlock Knights would seize Rurik and martyr him by throwing him off the tallest castle in the Order's lands, emboldening the Pravdan cause.
With Kalyu as the spiritual head of the Pravdans, he called on the faithful to take up arms to secure a better future for all people in the Ostraland. Figures such as the brothers Vasilej and Bertryll Starosta, Taisa Volymirich, former Knight-Fellthane Piotr Fyodorich, and former Knight-Vindicator Igorr Relkov would be inspired by this call to arms, leading the Pravdans to victory against the magic-wielding Warlock Knights. With the Order planning to send more troops to quell the rebellion, Kalyu called on the distant Luboff Clan from the Varangians of Icewind Dale to defeat the Warlock Knights in exchange for Jarl Markus Luboff to become King of the Palischians.
After the storming of Palischuk Castle, Jarl Markus and his Varangians would arrive in Palischuk to aid the Pravdan cause. Moved by the zeal of Kalyu, they would convert to the Pravdan faith. With the decisive defeat of the Dranja and Warlock Knights at Rolovsk by a force of Varangians and serfs led by Jarl Markus, the power of the Order was crushed in Ostraland. As they left the region, Father Kalyu, Father Arkady of Koloya, Father Mosalev of Rolovsk, Abbot Alexsei of Obnigrad, and Father Herich of Brasta would establish the Pravdan Church, which would vote Kalyu as the Patriarch of the Pravdan Church.
Patriarch Kalyu would crown Jarl Markus Luboff as King Markus Lyubov of the Palischians in 1479 DR. With the founding of the Kingdom of Palischuk, Patriarch Kalyu would advise the King on matters of faith and act as his personal confidant. In addition, he also acted as the court chaplain for Palischuk Castle.
In 1481 DR, Patriarch Kalyu would assist Princessa Lorina and the Bogatyrs by giving what advice he knew to help find the traitor aiding the assassin trying to sow discord in Palischuk Castle, noting that there was the foul stench of the demonic near. Shortly after, the Bogatyrs would slay the demon known as Baigan, who was disguised as a Varangian Guardsman. When they discovered that Father Benedikt, the parish priest of Palischuk, was also in on the conspiracy, Patriarch Kalyu aided the Bogatyrs by defrocking him from the priesthood once he was brought in by Princessa Lorina, allowing Benedikt to be arrested by the Varangian Guard without reprieve.
