Gurok Hammerfang was one of the tribe’s favored members. He was of mid-age and earned the pride of many of the elders, with his show of strength and brute tactics. His command of the animals under his care was well known within the region. Over the years he had proven to the other tribes in the region that his skills as a Packmaster were to be admired. For Lork he would have been someone to look up to, someone to aspire to become more like. Except for the fact that Lork was only half-orc and hated by Gurok.
Lork first memories of Gurok were rife with thoughts of cruelty and malice. Gurok would often tell him that he wasn’t worthy of being part of his tribe. He would often threaten Lork with having him banished from their tribe. The cruelty would have been worse had it not been for the fact that Lork’s mother was the younger sister to the current chief.
Urha-Mehar was a strong orc woman with an unwavering belief that the tribe’s greatest strengths lie within the spirit of her people. She was always encouraging towards her son Lork. Often telling him that the blood of his forefathers is true and of greater stalk then that of Gurok. That it was this that Gurok was jealous about and why he would pick on him. She would often tell Lork that one day he would be called upon to be chief of their tribe, because of his spirit and blood. Lork knew that his half-orc lineage would make that nearly impossible to come true, but it didn’t stop him from dreaming of becoming a great warrior for his tribe.
When he began the Trials of Enduring Might his mother carved a symbol into a bone and weaved it into his hair. She told him that it was the symbol of his father and would give him strength of spirit when he needed it the most. That it would guide him on his journeys and help him find the strength he seeks to become the warrior he desires to become. She showed him that it was the same symbol as the one she carved into another bone to celebrate the day of his birth. That this symbol was the symbol his father carried and wore when they first met.
Upon beginning his Trials of Adulthood, Lork was given another bone. This time it was given to him by his uncle the chief of his tribe. The chieftain Tuskar told him that this bone was carved with the symbol of his tribe. To ensure that he always knew and would always remember that no matter what, he would always be a part of this tribe. That no one could take that away from him.
The next bone that was tied into his hair came from his own hand. When he was accepted into the Golden Sky Clan for becoming a Packmaster and taming his first animal. The symbol carved was that of the Golden Sky Clan. Normally this bone was given by another clan member within their tribe to the orc when he becomes accepted by that clan. Sadly, the only other clan member in his tribe was Gurok and Gurok refused to give him such a bone. This didn’t stop Lork from entering the clan, as Gurok’s actions had no part in Lork’s joining of the clan. But it still bothered Lork that Gurok’s hatred of him would go so far as to refuse their peoples traditions.
Though his mother and uncle accepted Lork for who and what he was, Lork couldn’t shake the feeling of not belonging within his tribe. He longed to be seen as a full brother in arms, to feel connected in some deeper way. He felt that if he could find stronger beast to tame and bring into the tribe, that he might finally be seen as a warrior brother and bond more greatly with his tribe that he so loves. It was in this that he realized that if he was to find some greater beast to strengthen his tribe, that he would need to travel beyond the lands he had grown accustomed to hunting. That he would need to go where his people rarely travel and trade with races that his tribe rarely had ever even seen.
With this he spoke to his mother and told her of his plans to journey beyond their territory. It is then that she told him of the kingdom that his father ventured from. She said it wasn’t his homeland but the place where he spent much of his time. That his journeys often lead him back there in search of a powerful magical weapon. She told Lork of the tales his father had shared of the creatures and adventures he had, wondering around this kingdom. She expressed that if Lork were to find some new beast it would surely come from these lands or beyond. She said the land has a volcano that rests in its mountains and it sat on the boarder of the Northern Wilderness. To find it he simply had to go beyond the Wolfen empire and find a place where humans are the common race. A place where the people claim the land to belong to the Eastern Territories. With that Lork packed up his belongings and a few hides for trade and headed out to seek this place where the volcano would visit the land with ash from time to time.
The trek was longer than Lork had expected it to be. With several small skirmishes with local Wolfen and wild creatures as he journeyed to the new lands. But once he arrived, he knew he had the right place. The first town didn’t really hold much in it, so Lork decided to head to the next town that was better known as a trading town.
While exploring the market of this town Lork’s attention was taken by a shop which displayed exotic small animals as pets. While looking at the strangeness of one of the birds he heard his cat make a muster of noises. When he looked back at his cat, he caught him chasing a bird past a small young woman. Quickly he whistled to his cat with an angry and sharp tone. His cat stopped dead in his tracks and lowered his head as it made its way back to him.
Before he could turn his attention back to the shops the small woman was standing in front of him. Almost pressed up against him, she was on her tippy toes and holding a look on her face of anger. He was about to ask what this woman’s deal was when her face quickly changed to a confused look, and she lowered herself back to the heels of her feet. Confused by this woman’s actions he felt it was better just to walk away and go about his own business.
He went back looking at the shops and wears within the market, stopping only at the ones with bones or animals of strange origins. Every so often he would look back and see the young woman trying to hide as she followed him. A few times he thought about confronting her and asking her why she is now following him. But before he could give it more thought a priest walked up to him while he was purchasing some cured meat. “I’m sorry to intrude on your day, but I couldn’t help but notice one of the bones you have in your hair.” Lork looked over the priest and felt he was harmless enough. “The one with the family crest is of great interest to me. Would you be willing to tell me how you came to have it?” Lork felt there was no harm in telling this human where it came from. “It’s my father’s symbol.” The priest face was that of shock and curiosity. “And is your father still alive? Does he live near here?” Lork looked over the priest again sizing up why he had such an interest in his father. “I don’t know my father. He left before I was born. My mother gave me his symbol to help guide me and give me strength.” The priest began to smile. “I may know someone you might like to meet. Though it will take some explaining to understand. Will you come with me to my church? As it will be easier to explain if I show you what it is that I will be speaking to.” Confused by the priest statement Lork agreed to follow him.
Back at the church the priest led Lork to a small room in the back of the church, where a man lay sleeping in a bed. The priest asked Lork to sit with him in the main hall of the church as he explained himself. “That man comes from the same family as the symbol you carry with you. I believe he is your half-brother. Unfortunately, he has been in a coma for the last several months, and nothing seems to be able to wake him from it. I think the gods have willed this so as to have you two meet. Would you be willing to remain here for a short while to see if your presence will wake him from his slumber?” Lork paused to think about his offer for a moment. When the young woman once again caught his attention. She was trying to hide behind one of the pillars in the church but doing a poor job of it. “Ugh, I don’t know what this girls deal is? She’s been following me since the market.” The priest smirked and replied, “Then why don’t we ask her?” As the priest stood up, he called out to the young woman, “Hey there little one. We know you have been following my friend here since the market. Why don’t you come out and introduce yourself?”
The young woman came out from behind the pillar and began to use hand jesters to try to communicate with them. “Ah, you can’t speak I see.” Said the priest. “I guess that will make things a little more interesting.” After a short while she conveyed that she had been having dreams about the family crest that was carved in the bone that the half-orc had in his hair. That she was following him because she wanted to try to figure out what it meant and why she would be dreaming of such things. The priest told her that it belonged to a man that he had in the back of the church at this time. But unfortunately, this man was in a coma. The priest then expressed that he believed that this half-orc was the half-brother of this man as well. The priest then offered the young witch to stick around and wait to see if the man woke. As he felt that the gods had brought them together for some divine reason. He was sure that if they stuck around that the man was more likely to awake from his coma. She quickly agreed to stick around and see if he would wake.
While waiting to see if this man who was to be his half-brother would wake, Lork would often hang out with the young woman. Learning to figure out how to understand her hand gestures and facial expressions. He often felt that she might be flirting with him from time to time but wasn’t sure if that was just part of how she communicated. Aside from the young woman who identified herself as a witch, a soldier and an elf would stop by to see if the man had woken. During this time, he would often strike up a conversation with the elf. Mainly because the young witch would often try to communicate with him, and the elf would struggle to understand her.
From these conversations he learned that the elf was an investigator and was newly put in charge of figuring out some local mysteries. That these mysteries were also what the sleeping man were looking into before he fell into the coma. All of which intrigued Lork to want to learn more about his half-brother and his adventures.
Weeks had gone by before his half-brother woke from the coma, and in that time, he had grown fond of the young witch. With feelings of wanting to protect her as she seemed so naive to the harshness of the world that he knew all too well.
Over the next few days, Koning slowly regain his ability to walk and talk. Over those days Lork would visit and convey who he is and how he seeks to prove his worth to his tribe. He expressed that his father was forced away from his tribe before it was even known that his mother was pregnant with child. He also felt comfortable enough to tell Koning his relationship with his orc side of the family had always been strained. As he has always felt he had needed to constantly prove his value to them. Through meeting Koning it has given him the feeling of a new family strength and bonding he had long since missed with his orc family. That with this new family tie that Lork may finally see the strength his mother talked so much about in his father, through his half-brother.
Though they had just met Lork has felt a kinship within this man that goes beyond words at this point. A point of pride and strength from within that makes him wonder what else he may discover in this new land.
