Johann's family originally hails from Alvidar, but two generations before him they emigrated to Jerritor on the trail of opportunity. By the time Johann was born, they had established themselves as wealthy farmers, and Johann had plenty of opportunity to indulge his adoration of learning and history.

Fate intervened when Johann was in his late teens. Though the circumstances are as of yet unclear, he witnessed something that impressed in him how easily and suddenly things can be wiped from the world; possessions, people, places, even memory, all suddenly and irrevocably gone. This ignited a passion in him that would guide him for the rest of his life. He would not just observe and consume history; he would record it, preserve it, and do his meager mortal best to keep it from being lost completely to the grinding of an age.
