Once a feeble ember in the ashes of Havre-Ordure, Micaiah Louvre became a gleaming candle in the extravagant halls of the noble Brillante. It was not an easy transformation, and not one he made of his own free will. It’s not something he remembers well, the people; he was so young. But the flame that consumes secrets also writes it down, and it’s there, somewhere.

It goes like this: a troupe in the ruins of the old city settles down in the early morning. They’re a pauper’s theatre, a small light in those dark shadows of the city, as much a family as they are an ensemble on the stage. The evening before had been successful show, with an audience that was generous with their donations despite their rags and their tires, worn faces, and the troupe celebrated just until the dawn began to break. Their rest was not to last, as the guards de’Louvre, perhaps a bit too bored, stormed into their camp and laid it waste. They were not so cruel as to kill the children, but they were not so kind either; and they returned them to the nobles of the house. These nobles were well regarded in their social circles for their extravagance and influence, and well feared by the people of Havre-Ordure for their cruelty. In some ways Michaiah was lucky. He was chosen to be brought into the household staff as a singer and dancer and companion for the house and their guests. She learned to read people very well, and learned how to shape herself to their desires and expectations. More importantly, he knows how to get people to do what she wants. Micaiah knows his vulnerability will be taken advantage of, and knows, also, that people are most vulnerable when they think they’ve won. He also knows that, for much of the world, helplessness is not so despised, and some are inclined so save others that would need it.

He was surviving, but he was not so foolish as to think himself  a person in this house; he was no more a person than a gilded statue or a songbird in a cage. When a mysterious guest of the house offers him a chance to escape that cage, he is all to eager to agree to the deal she presented. He does not realize he made a pact with a Fiend as a part of this, the devil Beauson de Bete.

Now that he’s emancipated himself, he’s found himself in a classic scenario of the fiend: out of the frying pan and into the fire. A lot of his survival skills are social, and he’s learning magic on the fly. He’s a feeble thing and she’s never learned to really trust someone, so his go-to is to try and manipulate them. The messengers her patron sends her assure him that this is necessary but he’s privileged in some ways he had not realized before he stepped out of his gilded cage and free-fell into the sky.

Lately he’s been getting by stealing food from distracted vendors and sleeping in eaves of homes or the beds of strangers he charms with the performances of his lyre. But if she’s going to survive she’ll have to accept the guidance of her devious patron.

Roasted duck with pickled radish and apple, garnished with sour cream and caramelized onion. This is considered extremely weird by his peers.

Contacts & Relations

Beauson de’Bete – his patron, the lord of the Fiendish House of Beasts. His presence is a mysterious one for Micaiah; they have never spoken as far as she knows. In reality the devil has appeared to Micaiah in the form of former housestaff of de’Louvre, promising to guide him to be the ideal member of the House de’Bete. He is manipulative and wise, cunning like a crow, and he has plans for Micaiah.

Genouise and Pierre de’Louvre—the lady and lord of house de’Louvre. Their reputation for cruelty precedes them, and for good reason. Few other houses are so brazen or powerful as to raid entire communities, and whispers of their survivors fates is not one to be envied. Micaiah was a favorite of Genouise, though Pierre was a source of fear, a jealous and vengeful man. Both want Micaiah captured and returned to the house, but for different reasons.

Rendata – a member of the entertainment staff at House de’Louvre. She and Micaiah loathed eachother, each vying for the attention and favors of the house and their visitors. The two often dueled in the salons and festivals through various sabotageries. With Micaiah gone, where has she risen in the house, and what could that mean for Micaiah if he’s caught?

Verrin – a member of the guard staff at house de’Louvre, and a good friend/part time lover of Micaiah’s, though Micaiah is too wary to realize how much Verrin has grown to mean to him. He has stepped in for Micaiah on several occasions and protected him from disaster through more than one ball. He’s a part of the search team for Micaiah, but he’s not sure he wants to see her caught
