The Start of a Very Strange Adventure

by Astrid

When you live in the Prime Age of Tech you don't ever use paper. I don't think I've ever touched paper. It's banned because it "kills the trees" and "it's too outdated". Which is why I love it. Paper. Pencils. Erasers. Basically if you know of something old-fashioned and banned then I love it.
Anyways...yesterday I got a letter. Like someone mailed me a piece of paper in an envelope made of paper. It was so weird. And what was in it...well....

I woke up on Tuesday morning when my VA(Virtual Assistant) woke me up. I got dressed and ate breakfast, just like any regular day. I turned on my School Comm and sat on my bed listening to my VEI(Virtual Education Instructor) talk about anything from the history of our country to Foreign Languages to Linear Algebra. At about 14 hundred hours, while my class had a free period to talk on our comms, I heard a knock on my bedroom door. I went to see who was there and opened the door to find no one was there. I looked down and saw paper. I picked it up, went back inside and locked myself in my room. I hid the envelope under my blouse until I could get under my bed sheets so the comm's camera couldn't see the paper.
I opened the envelope as quietly as possible and pulled the paper out of it. I unfolded the paper until it was as flat as I could get it. Once I got over the excitement of getting paper, I studied it. I realized this paper didn't look anything like the paper I've seen in pictures, this paper looked old. The paper itself was more of a beige color than white(which was the color i expected it to be) and its edges were a darker brown, almost like someone burnt it. I put the paper up to my nose and smelled it. Yes, that's right. I. Smelled. The. Paper. It smelled burnt. So it did catch on fire, I thought, or maybe someone was trying to burn it for a specific reason...Anyway, other than the burnt smell, it actually smelled really cool and old, I don't even know how to describe it. And it felt so different, almost like if strands of hair were melted together into one thin flat sheet. After I finished studying the first side of the paper I turned it over and saw writing. It looked nothing like I've ever seen before, it was sloppy and some words were darker than others but I still tried my best to read it.
It read:
Dear _____,
My world is in trouble. My grandfather told me that if I ever needeth help, that I am to write a letter to this address. I was never told why, or whom I was writing to. I was told was to never trust this information to any other person or creature besides thou. I know you do not know whom I am. But alas, I need your help. My world is ending. A war is afoot and people are kicking the bucket at every turn, quite similarly to the plague. Please help. Although you are not required to, if you do care to help me please follow the instructions below:
If finding me is what you seek,
go atop the mountains highest peak.
Listen for the howl of a Moonwolf
And follow till it's silenced.
Once you see the tree with "Race against Rime" engraved in it
Climb until the sky is not as before.
After you complete this another clue is hidden in the tree. I am quite sorry for making this so difficult alas it is for the safety of us both.
Destroy this letter as soon as possible.
I wish you luck,
O.A.
P.S. say hello to your mother for my grandfather.
