Physical Description

Kai is built well, his body shaped by life at sea and its physical requirements. He is not in any way muscular or large, but broad shoulders covered by his cloak tell of a man who's not a stranger to working with his hands.

Identifying Characteristics

Kai's eyes glow with a sea blue colored aura that varies in intensity depending on his level of concentration.

Apparel & Accessories

Kai wears a simple shirt and pants, usually hidden beneath a full cloak with a deep hood. When preparing for battle, he dons a breastplate forged of Living Steel. A number of shells and fetishes linked to the sea adorn the hem of his cloak and dangle from his belt in places.

Personal history

Born at sea to a human mother of the Tangata Wai people, and a spring elven father, it was no surprise to anyone when Kai showed an affinity to the sea itself and the spirits inhabiting the water realm. Still in his cradle, rocked to sleep by the waves of the sea, Kai had a visitor in form of a sea krait and yet the serpent did him no harm. Instead it appeared as if the creature was there to protect the boy. Two of them formed a bond as he grew up on his father's merchant ship as well as various port cities around the world, learning about the sailor's craft and the invisible world of spirits that surrounded him.
When he came of age, the young half-elf expressed his wishes to strike out on his own and seek his own fortune at sea to his parents. Even with his father, a lifelong wanderer using trade as means to support his lifestyle, and his mother, who escaped her homeland in her youth, under circumstances she would never reveal, he was still concerned they might react poorly to his desires. To his surprise they both smiled and accepted his wishes, even outfitting him with enough supplies and gold to begin his journey.
 
His connection to the spiritual world evolved into an ability to predict the future to a certain extend, and as such he has found employment on a number of merchant and exploration vessels as a navigator, able to plot the safest or most direct course to an intended destination, even taking ships through waters that few others sailed over the next several years.
 
A quiet young man, Kai prefers to keep his own company most of the time, but seems always happy to get involved in a mischievous scheme when a friend asks. That's how he met Lorenza while taking a breather in Osterlund's port. Together they may have taken something someone else was overly attached to, and evaded capture by signing up on the Gale. They've remained close, watching each other's backs on board of the ship.

Education

Taught in the way of the sea by his father, and in the way of the spirits by his mother, Kai has no formal education. Living a life at sea taught him all the skills required to survive on a ship.

Intellectual Characteristics

Kai is not a sharp witted individual, but he is by no means dim. He simply learned to take his time and consider all options before making a decision.

Kai believes that freedom is what should guide everyone's life. Freedom to pursue your own goals. He doesn't believe in initiating violence, but has no qualms about taking what belongs to others. He simply prefers to do so without bloodshed, but will fight if attacked.

Jorm is Kai's spirit animal, a sea krait usually coiled around the half-elf's shoulders and keeping a watchful eye around. Jorm is clearly not of this world as its body is translucent, as if made of water.
