Tragedy struck a year ago when my family home in Niðavelir was attacked by the Scarlet Reavers while I was away as a mercenary. The brigands slew one of my childhood friends and took my mother as prisoner to ransom. They demanded no less than thirty pounds each of gold and silver for her release, and when we were unable to pay promised to hold her as their slave until we could. All of this I learned from the city guard when I returned from my work, with that information and wrath of vengeance I set out to rescue my mother. In my blind fury I left behind everything I owned.
I wandered the Northlands aimlessly for days fueled only by the vengeance in my heart until I came upon Traveller's Dell. There, I sought to stabilize myself, earn some gold, and learn some more about the Scarlet Reavers so I joined the caravan guard of a Lormidian merchant Avyn Sureluck.

While resting in Jerntan Hold I learned that the Scarlet Reavers have come through the Kynesreach and are making their way down into the Old Empire. Eyewitnesses recognised a slave among them that fit my description of my mother.
