Personal history
I was born the third son of a minor noble. As such, I grew up knowing that I would not inherit any of our family's lands. At the age of 10, I was sent by my father to be a squire under the tutelage of a seasoned knight who owed him a debt from a long ago battle. I took to my training immediately, seeing my only chance for a prosperous future in serving as a knight to a wealthy lord. At the age of 18, I passed the trials to become a full Knight of the kingdom - one of the youngest knights to gain the title. For 4 years. I continued in the service of my mentor, grateful for the years of training and care. During those years I served my mentor well, patrolling his lands, mentoring squires alongside him. I also continued my training, becoming increasingly skilled as the years went by. In the dawn of the 5th year of my service to my mentor, he succumbed to a disease resulting from a long ago injury. On his deathbed, he encouraged me to return home - to start a family of my own. Returning home, although strange after so much time away, was enjoyable. My family had kept in contact with me over the years, through letters and visits along the years. My father was still alive, but not able to do nearly as much as he once could - many of his duties being handled by my eldest brother, Bertino. For 2 years I spent my time at home, serving my family as a knight; as well as attending social gatherings at the insistence of my mother and 2 sisters. During the first of such events, I met the eldest daughter of a well of merchant from a nearby city - Sofia Vasari. Sofia was an interesting case, especially for her upbringing. She was a kind woman, seen in the way she treated her father's workers and those whom she met at the gatherings - taking the time to get to know them. The most striking thing about her, so much so that many potential suitors were driven away because of it, was her intelligence. She was intuitive, often seeing things that everyone else missed, and horribly stubborn when she knew she was in the right. Strangely these qualities did not deter me in the slightest. Slowly, we were able to get to know each other quite well; writing letters to each other often. After a year of courting Sofia, we were wedded in a simple ceremony. After a few months, she became pregnant; a joy I had long dreamed of. Time flashed by, my duties as a knight; preparation for the child; building a new residence for my own family all vying for attention. Soon the day was upon us, her birthing pains in full swing. I was nervous, irritable. My beloved was in pain, struggling to bring a new life into the world - and I couldn't do anything to relieve her. All I could to was stand by her side as she bore the pain by herself. The birth of my son, the third grandchild of my father, took many hours, but was completed. My wife fought her fight and succeeded in bringing an innocent life into the world - at the cost of her own. Grief and joy found fellow ship in those days, often tearing me from one to the other in a moments notice. 2 years this pain plagued me, uncontrolled with no one to lay the blame on - with no relief. I named my son Matteo, believing, much to the confusion of my family and peers, that he was a gift. Matteo was innocent, he didn't cause the death of my wife. Fortunately, Matteo proved to be his mother's son - often proving he was much smarter than any other child his age had a right to be. Just after the death of Sofia, an old acquaintance of my father by the name of Amideo Barbeta visited for several months - saying his good byes to my father who's health was rapidly deteriorating. During his vist, I became close friends with Amideo and his only son Alfonso. With the death of my father at the end of their visit, I accepted a position under Amdieo. The Lord Barbeta was a wealthy man, as such he had in his service many knights - most of whom had seen conflict before. Because of my father, Amdieo extended to me a generous offer in his service that I doubted I would find anywhere else. I swore my allegiance to the Barbeta family, in exchange for generous pay, education and care for my son, and quarters in the family estate. Mere months after settling in to my new lot in life, the Fourth Crusade was called. Initially I was uninterested, having my son to take care of, and my loyalty to House Barbeta demanding I stay and serve; however, Alfonso, against the wishes of his father, committed to the Crusade. Amideo Barbeta, seeing that his son would go no matter what, charged me with his safety - at all costs he should be kept safe. And so I go, not because I feel a puffed up sense of piety that drives me to slay those who believe differently than I do. I go because my liege commanded I go, because my closest friend decided to go. I fight, not for God, but to keep him alive so he can see his wife and child again. May God have mercy on us so we can see home once again.
