Personal history
Born in 1072 to House Metullo, I was the third of five sons in my family. I was never in line to inherit my families lands and titles, and after being passed over for every kindness or gift to my older, or younger, brothers up to my tenth year, I was sent to squire for an old Knight, Sir Geraldo Carano, my family had known for decades. He had squired for my grandfather once, many years ago, and swore to teach me the ways of the Knight.
I'd have imagined leaving my family would have been hard. But it was a kindness. They were never wrong to me, they just didn't care. They seemed to have forgotten about me. My father sending me away to Sir Geraldo was perhaps the best thing they could do for me.
I'd live and squire with Geraldo for ten years. Never once had my family written or visited me. Eventually, I started referring to myself as Carano instead of Metullo. I had adopted his sigil for my own, and had started calling him Father. I was educated greatly in the ways of theology. I was knighted in my twenty-first year of life as Sir Alfio Carano. None of my old family had attended.
Geraldo passed away later that same year, naming me his heir. His estate wasn't much, the manor we had lived in and some fields peasants worked nearby. But they were mine. I was called into service by the Lord of my land to defeat bandits that had started to grow bold. They had begun attacking and burning villages in the countryside, slaughtering all the men and taking the women and children.
I was Twenty-two years of age when I took part in my first battle, when I had taken my first life. We had discovered the bandits camp. By this time, they had numbered in the hundreds. The force I was apart of had numbered one hundred, by comparison.
The bandits fell upon us like rain, and had destroyed us. Twenty knights and Forty-six household guard had fallen by the end of the combat. We had killed roughly one hundred and thirteen of the bandits.
We were forced to retreat. We had numbered ten knights and twenty-four guard when we returned to our Lord. The bandits stepped up their brutality while we recovered. Several more villages had burned, the traderoutes through the land were set upon constantly. Trade in our region had slowed to a halt. It took the intervention of the Duke to finally gather a force strong enough to defeat the bandit threat.
No expense was deemed unnecessary. We had gathered a force one thousand strong to deal with the bandit threat. They, by this time, had numbered Five-hundred, and themselves were veterans of several battles compared to some scared peasants, war-weary knights, and defeated young upstarts like myself.
We approached the land the Bandits terrorized most frequently, and were again set upon. They fought as blood thirsty animals more then men, and cut through their foes with brutality unlike I had seen before. However, the numbers were on our side this time and it proved fortunate. They had been surrounded by our superior force, several hundred mounted knights, and cut down to a man.
For my efforts in the battle, I was rewarded a sizable tithe and offered a place in my Lords personal retinue and was called upon dozens of more times for dozens of more battles against bandits and properly armed and armored forces both. For ten more years I served and killed for my Lord and his lands, before the Crusade was called.
I was determined for this to be my holy calling. For this to be the campaign to end all campaigns. I was determined to make my mark on the world as a whole and expand beyond the small lands of my Lord.
