Personal history
From a young age, Korinna was called to the Wilds. She could often be found in the village gardens or in the surrounding forest, barefoot and filthy. Nothing pleased her more than swimming in a cool stream or running with a herd of deer. Though her family tried their best to tame her, Korinna frequently found ways to skip out on chores and lessons. Despite countless punishments and many chaperones, she always found her way back to the woods. She couldn't ignore the tug in her soul at the sight of the Nessian Woods that bordered her home.
Thankfully, Korinna's mother Latona was a pious woman. She had served her time in the holy order of the Arktoi and believed that their wisdom could help her daughter find a place in their world. Holy service was tradition in their family and had created opportunities for many women, in a world where there were sometimes few.
When Korinna was ten years old, she was sent to the sacred spring of Artemis in the Nessian Woods, to serve the Goddess until she reached adulthood.
She was nervous - scared, even - to leave her home and live amongst strangers, but Korinna felt the call of the Wilds in her heart and knew that this place, deep in the heart of the Woods, was her true home. She donned the honey-colored vestments of the Arktoi and did not look back.
Years passed. Korinna grew from girl-child to young woman in the service of Artemis. She learned the Way of the Bear - the way of intense devotion and savage grace, of fearsome beauty and calm affection. She was taught to use a bow - to hunt when needed, but to also protect the wild places of the world from the far-reaching spread of human cities.
Korinna quickly gained a reputation as an expert hunter and highly skilled ranger, capable of disappearing into the trees without a trace. She could track humans and animals through the woods with barely a thought and frequently went off on her own, capturing poachers to bring to Arktoi justice.
Despite her skill with a bow and her fierce devotion to Artemis, Korinna was not at ease with her fellow Arktoi. Their presence sometimes overwhelmed her - so much noise and emotion were too much for her to understand. Animal minds were much simpler. The sister-bears, to their credit, were nothing but kind. They tried to understand Korinna. Failing that, they accepted her for the strange, semi-feral creature she was.
Korinna, for her part, loved them as best she could. While she was often frustrated with the others, she spoke gently to the children in their care and taught them well. She was a fierce protector of their home and provided well for all who lived in the sacred spring or nearby.
As Korinna's 18th birthday approached, the call of the Wilds grew stronger and stronger in her mind. She started to awaken in the night, startled from her dreams by the sounds of baying hounds and a huntress urging them on. She felt the urge to run, farther and faster than she ever had before. She knew her family would come to collect her, to bring her home and find a place for her in their village. Whether she married or not, she knew she would never again have the freedom to run and shoot and be that she did now.
The night before her birthday, she woke near-frantic from a nightmare of cages and lost freedom. This was her last chance to run.
In the dark of the night, Korinna packed her few belongings. In the tradition of her sister-bears, she left her honey-colored robes in the sacred spring as an offering, keeping only the amber bear claw she wore around her neck.
Bow in hand, Korinna disappeared into the Nessian Woods, leaving a note behind for her sisters:
"I have gone into the peace of wild things. I will live in the grace of the world and be free."
